Voices of Rio: 20 Years on the Front Lines of the Global Fight for Sustainability
A team of Colorado young professionals is traveling to the Rio +20 Summit in Brazil, as members of the press, to document this historic event on film. The summit is an opportunity to capture the lessons of the last 20 years, and ideas for the future, from voices known and unknown in the global fight for sustainability.
We are asking for $8,000 from the on-line community to defray the cost of airfare, lodging, translation services, and film production.
· The team will be in Brazil from June 15-25.
· We will leverage experience in film, environmental and community organizing, education, strategic consulting, and work on four continents, to produce a first class documentary.
More about the Earth Summit and Rio +20
The 1992 Earth Summit was a landmark event that brought together 172 nations to focus on sustainable development. The Summit produced three cornerstones of 20th century global environmental action:
· Agenda 21 – the first program for international cooperation on sustainability
· The Convention on Biological Diversity
· the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
This year the vision that the first Earth Summit began is being revitalized as the Rio +20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. This will be another unprecedented gathering of governments, thousands of NGOs, scientists, and leading personalities from environmental and social justice work.
The occasion to interview international leaders on issues such as agriculture, energy, climate change, urban development, and water resources is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The resulting film will be marketed internationally, and will aid in educating citizens and invigorating community action around a panorama of issues. The team will also offer live webcasts and Skype calls from Rio to chronicle our engagement of these complex and interconnected problems.
Once produced, the film will be shown throughout the region, at film festivals, and will be distributed internationally in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
