Frank Chimero is a graphic designer, teacher, writer, and creative person in Portland, Oregon. His fascination with the creative process, curiosity, and visual experience informs all of his work. Each piece is part of an exploration in finding wit, surprise, honesty, and joy in the world around us, then, trying to document those things. Right now he's thinking about writing a book.
Got my book today, been holding off on reading it until I had the physical form. Looks great Frank!
Looking forward for it to arrive :)
Hi Mel— The printed and ebooks have shipped, but I am still working on the web-based version. I hope to release it soon. Thanks!
Will a link be emailed to those of us who selected the web-based version, or will it be available here on Kickstarter? Thanks! (PS, it looks beautiful -- I might just have to buy a hardcover version anyway!)
luciano: All books will ship this week. International shipping can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks, depending on destination, though most orders heading to Europe arrive within 10 days.
When does the book come in for the oversea backers?
Oops! Saw that was the ebook. Sorry about that ...
I see that at least one backer has received the book. I have not -- what is the status on shipping?
Just got the e-book - BEAUTIFUL !! Really good care to make the book great on the kindle ! I wouldn't have expect less. I was hoping I could read the book in 24 hours so I could give feedback on the whole book, but I had to stop and take it in one part at a time! It's a really great read ~ thanks!!
WOOHOO!
Really, really excited for this.
Go, Frank!!
Let us know if you'd like any crit for the design!
Marvellous, at last some news! Hopefully!
Hi all— I'll be posting a big update on the status of everything tomorrow. I have very happy news.
@Chris Witham - when I went to his Twitter account I saw this message: "To the Kickstarter backers: expect a nice, big update this week" to which I replied: "Why not mention this on Kickstarter or at least signpost to Twitter for updates? There's a discussion going on there..." he's not replied to me although he's posted many tweets since to others about other stuff...
@Tom McLaughlan - Let me know if he does respond via Twitter and if he does let's hope he updates all his backers on Kickstarter too!
It's been almost a year now and I can't remember if the money has already been paid or not, if it has I think I'm getting close to wanting it back!
@Chris Witham - I'm glad I'm not the only one who's disappointed. Five days ago I left this on the comment stream of the last update but haven't had any reply at all: "It's a bit disappointing to have to go searching through comments to learn of the latest delay, especially as the front page FAQ still refers to late fall/early winter 2011. Forgive me if I'm being unfair, I'm just keen to be kept in the loop. Delays I can understand but a failure to communicate the news is not ideal."
This is the one and only Kickstarter project I've supported and I jumped in as soon as I knew about it because I've always enjoyed and been inspired by Frank's work. Now I feel let down. When you receive $112,159 worth of financial support, I think you owe it to them (us) to communicate better and more. I am going to see if he responds via Twitter as he seems to have the time to communicate via that platform. One of his last tweets read: "I have this magic trick where I open a text editor and can sometimes make the world disappear"...
Again, I apologise if any of this comes across as harsh but take it as a sign of my disappointment.
Sorry, should have been... 'you're alive' on that last sentence, couldn't let that go ;-)
What has happened to this project exactly, has Frank ran away with the money or is he locked away somewhere trying to get it done?
It would be nice to know what's going on, I think this has been the worst project I've backed to date as far as being kept in the loop goes!
Come on Frank a few timely updates would be much appreciated by your 2,109 backers, just so we know that at least your alive ;-)
Might have to take you up on that coffee sometime. Ever find yourself near Saturdays Surf?
Thanks for the messages, all. Just wanted to get back and say that I'll be posting another update on Wednesday, and I think you'll all be happy.
Count me in too on the update situation please?
Would love to have an update on the progress. Good or bad.
Same here .. I almost forgot this project completely ...
At least two would like to know. Been 9 months.
So your 2,109 backers would like to know how things are going.
Wake me up when you finish.
Hi Frank, how is it going any rough estimate on when you think you'll get to print?
Mr. Chimero,
Your airport-inspired letter is a day-brightener. I was half staring at a computer screen with at least half writers block. After reading your letter, my creative juices started to flow and I was certain I could get back to my writing with some success. I am eagerly awaiting my copy of your book. It will be in my traveling briefcase for use during those occasions you so accurately describe in your letter. Thanks for the writing boost today.
Oooh, i love the beginning about airports and halfway. I've never been able to sleep on airplanes. Over the years, i've learned that rather than be annoyed by this time "wasted" in travel, i use every flight/airport experience as a time to fully embrace doing things that i normally can not fully embrace. I read books, watch movies, journal, write letters without any sort of guilt associated with what i should be doing with my time. I know the feeling is not a perfect match, as clearly "writing the book" is something you feel like you "should" be doing. but perhaps you can look at this airport/travel time as a time outside of regular time. For me, it's my one chance to fully embrace without guilt activities i love, for you, perhaps a jump start or get ahead point where you can dive into the book with a slightly different mind than where you are dealing with it from in every day life.
Frank, thanks so much for the update. It's great to hear the writing is proceeding. I look forward to future updates and reading the book!
Great writing is being succinct.
I just joined kickstarter today and glad I did. Simple yet effective video you got here. I watched your video as well on vimeo. Excellent talk! Brilliant take on the shape and paradox of design. I was thinking along the same lines but you couldn't have presented it any better. I sat at the edge of my seat all throughout that 30 minute video and also lost some beauty sleep. Truly delightful! I will be watching out for your book. I'm a fashion designer by the way. Thank you, Frank!
Peter - There will be copies available for purchase once the book is completed.
Shoot! I missed out on this; will there be a place to buy the book eventually?
Frank, if you ever make it to Australia to talk let me know where and when. In fact, here's an invite to speak at University of Canberra from me. If it something your interested in let me know and I'll start a whip around see if we can raise an airfare. BTW, I'm a student at University of Canberra and in no way officially represent the University of Canberra. But, I think I can lobby the officials if need be.
Well done, Frank! I really like the way you structured your pledges. You really have a lot of respect for your patrons. In fact, I just launched my first Kickstarter yesterday with similar incentives. I'm writing a book about an Iraqi Master Photographer named Fuad Shakir. Check it out! It's called Baghdad Antebellum! : )
Hey Frank, Where are you going for the three $3000 backers?
Glad to see that you got what you needed for your project!
NICE VIDEO YOU MADE T@@ ;-)
Wow, over $112k - nice job Frank! I hope all that cash doesn't entice you to go wild on the town (just think, burn 12k and you're still sitting on a hundred thousand dollars!)
Congratulations, Frank. The question "Why?" is not asked or answered often enough. This is more clear to me than ever, having recently returned home from a major design conference. Your goal to offer your perspective through a thoughtful analysis of design is one that deserves support. I look forward to reading your book.
Well done Frank!
Excited to follow along for the journey.

Wooot :)
Nice one :)
I can only say one thing... I can't wait to have the book in my hands!!
Very inspiring. It's a very necessary book for everyone studying design (traditionally and nontraditionally).
I'm excited that your book is my first project that I backed on Kickstarter. It means a lot.
Congratulations!
To clarify: this book will be available to purchase outside of Kickstarter once it is finished.
I'm not surprised you exceeded your goal, the presentation was simple, yet amazing. Much success Frank.
Frank, you've done an amazing job with this Kickstarter project so far. I know the book will be as awesome as the funding has been. Congratulations.
You are going sky high. Awesome! Congrats! I wish you nothing but the best! Dios te bendiga!
