Yoga Robot is a concept to bring a mechanical yoga instructing machine to the playa at Burning Man 2012.
Yoga Robot has been accepted to become a part of the inner playa for Burning Man this year. We have a lot of donated parts and plenty of time to get things going. What we really need now is a bit of funding to buy secret robot parts. We have minimal funding so far that is going to be spent on solar equipment to run the project. If the kickstarter project goes through, we should have sufficient funds to get some cool motors and arms and other stuff that robots like. Because robots like you, and you like yoga, and everyone should have a Yoga Robot.
The Yoga Robot is planned to be a 1960's 'Lost in Space' style robot, which will guide students through the finer points of robotic yoga. It is being built from recycled and re-used parts. The body is an old mannequin, the head is a used exit sign, and the circuitry and much of the lighting and sound system is recycled. There will be a video screen and speakers that will guide users, along with automated movement.
No. Due to Burning Man weapon restrictions, and the fact that it's insanely cost prohibitive, the Yoga Robot will not have a 'death ray'.
While the short answer should probably be yes, the answer is no. Most robots want to do good. They are built and programmed to be our servants. They generally mean us no harm. There are occasions where robots malfunction and become evil. While Yoga Robot is not being built for evil purposes, there is still potential that she may go berzerk and become an evil robot.
There is no plan to give the robot human feelings at this time. That would change her into a humanoid, and we hadn't really planned to go that route...
No, I'm not mad at anyone, and I certainly wouldn't consider myself a scientist.
There will no doubt be some changes to your current definition of what yoga can be. Stiff, awkward poses and rapid mood changes will come into your stream of consciousness. Perhaps a new understanding of speed yoga will come to mind. And you may even have your fight or flight reflexes tested if the robot decides to become evil.
Unfortunately, eating while exercising can be painful if not dangerous. And we didn't want to compete with other camps that serve bacon full time. Combine that with the potential for a greasy yoga mat, and I think you'll see our reasoning.
No. Due to the rectangular shape of the robots head, a top hat would be impractical at best. Hats would also obscure the lighting, and the head movement may cause any headwear to be ejected prematurely.
