I apologize for the very long overdue update. I have been meaning to write a number of times, but things kept changing! And I wanted to write you with some clear facts. So alas, a long update. A bit of a story! But it has been a journey that you are apart of, so here goes:
As you remember in November, I postponed the show, with an agreement to perform it in the Spring. However hard this was, I do not regret this decision. This choice gave me time to rest, heal and really give the piece the work it deserves.
Since, I have been doing much dancing and regrouping with myself and my art. As many of you might know, I created a weekly blog of dance improvisations in nature, which has proven to be not only helpful for my craft but also healing and fun. To see the blog follow this link: http://www.bodyboca.tumblr.com/ (Click on the archive in the bottom right corner to view all pieces of work.)
I have settled happily in Santander Cantabria (my boyfriend and I live here) and I was granted a residency at Palacio de Festivalis. This residency has given me two months of free studio space to rehearse, rework and refine the piece daily! It has been a fantastic blessing. A wonderfully supportive place! To learn more about this theater and foundation, you can visit their website: http://www.palaciofestivales.com/
Then, to much disappointment La Caldera (my Theater in Barcelona) wrote me in mid-February to say they have temporarily closed their doors! They are having problems with their neighbors as well as maybe some other unspoken issues. Spain is a country in a crisis at the moment. Also, La Caldera is technically not a Theater space but rather an educational performance foundation, which is how I received support from them as an emerging artist. Needless to say, this event left me in a difficult position.
With the help of a few friends, we looked into producing my show at various theaters throughout Spain but to no avail. For one, it was too late to book a show for the Spring at the end of February and two, the show was being produced on an emerging artist grant in Barcelona, so it lacked production materials, i,e. a trailer, footage of the entire piece in the Theater, professional photos etc.. I was making the show at La Caldera to create these exact things.
After much reflection, I decided that the next best thing would be achieve all these production materials, which will allow me to submit the show to various theaters in Spain and abroad for next year. I spoke with my videography, the lovely Claudia Perez and La Caldera. I have decided to use the rest of funds to rent the theater for a day with a technician and Claudia to film the entire piece. This will allow us to create a trailer for the piece as well as good documentation for the entire show. We will film the piece in Barcelona at La Caldera on April 1st! (Yes, April Fool's Days. :)
However, to be honest, I was still a bit unsatisfied. The filming will not allow for use of projections or a live audience. Also, I am of the opinion that the a filming of a show in a black box theater is just not the same as a live performance. After speaking with Claudia and friends, I decided to utilize the fact that we are making a movie for the moment and not a live performance. This led us to the idea of filming parts of the choreography in sight specific outdoor locations throughout Barcelona! So we will make one production of Dentro de la Ballena / Inside the Whale that includes me dancing in the theater, outside in Barcelona, underwater dancing and my artwork! I am pretty excited about this film as I think it will capture the fantastical nature of the piece!
And many of you will receive this exact video! WOO! The rewards are still coming along. I made all the hats for you lovely backers! You can get a glimpse of below in a dance video I made last month for the blog!
Lastly, I must add, that if I have learned anything this past year, it has been patience. I feel my show is finally coming to life thanks to all of you. Your support has inspired me to not give up on this dream. I thank you for having patience and not giving up on me!
I leave for Barcelona Wednesday to film everything. This will be the end of most of my work at the moment, but also the beginning steps so that this show can be performed next year and also become a movie.:) The movie, Dentro de la Ballena / Inside the Whale, will be edited until about June. I promise to keep you posted (in a briefer fashion) more often in these next months.
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!
Much light & love,
