My project is to create a suite of 91 paintings and drawings featuring The Man of La Mancha, aka Don Quixote, in 3 months, or 91 days.
I've always considered Don Quixote to be a great analogy for any artist.
Wandering on a swaybacked horse, his armor in place and a long spear at the ready, Don Quixote doggedly pursues what he believes he must pursue. He continues despite the odds, not because of any end reward, but because it is the battle to get there that is necessary. Delusional though he may be, and misinterpreting nearly everything he sees, Don Quixote is never in doubt.
Pursuing personal visions regardless of what others say is the chief tenement of any artist. Perhaps this is why the character has inspired artists from Picasso and Honoré Daumier to Man of La Mancha, the musical. Individuals can be right while all the naysayers are quite wrong.
I first began this project in the summer of 2011 as a grant proposal that was rejected, but still the figure of Quixote stayed with me. I imagined him wandering my landscapes, and as I began painting him, both he and the landscapes began to shift in shape and style. The work had a life of its own as it moved into synthetic cubism. It wasn't until the grant was not approved that I realized the irony of my persistence.
I was Don Quixote. And I have a radical goal that I need your help to complete. If you will, I'm asking you to be my Sancho Panza.
My goal is to create 41 paintings that range from mid-size to large to small, and 50 drawings and watercolors, all in just 3 months.
That's 91 paintings in 91 days.
If I can reach my funding goal of $3000, that will buy the art supplies for all 91 drawings and paintings on paper. Any amount of funding above the goal will go towards photographing and documenting the project, then to promotion and marketing to galleries and exhibition spaces.
Paintings are not only an end in themselves but also an impetus for the paintings that follow. This suite of work will be both a completed cycle that stands on its own as well as a bridge to inspire the series that comes next.
Where will these paintings take me and my work? Nobody knows, but at least I will have achieved what often seems like an impossible dream; a fully realized body of completed work! With that and your support I will be ready to take my career to the next level.
I will be posting updates on my blog: mbwilsonart.wordpress.com as the project progresses. Backers will be able to select their rewards from a gallery on the blog.
By the 92nd day I may find that I have just scratched the surface of this subject or I may be ready to move on to something completely different. I can't wait to find out! I have plenty of ideas I would like to get to.
I hope you can join me on the journey.
Thank you for your support!

The successful conclusion of this project will be a huge achievement. It will put me in a very good position to pursue gallery representation, with a fully realized body of mature work.
I have never attempted a project of such ambitious scale in the past and I see this as both my biggest challenge and my greatest opportunity. It will take more dedication, time, sweat, sacrifice, and above all, material resources than my previous bodies of work have required. As such, it represents a pivotal point in my life as an artist.
I have taken the necessary steps to ensure these paintings and drawings are completed on time including setting daily and weekly working goals, minimizing distractions by rescheduling other commitments and taking on an assistant who will manage many of my regular administrative duties.
I can’t wait to get started. I want to have the largest series of paintings I've ever had. They say artists peak at a particular time in their lives. I want to prove that peaking is a choice! I am ready to have my most productive period as an artist. And I want to reward you for helping me.
When the funding goal has been reached and we can confirm the project will be funded, I will begin on the 91 Paintings. The drawings and paintings that I have done in preparation for the 91 Days, including the pieces you see on the site here, and on my blog, mbwilson.wordpress.com, will be available as rewards, as will the pieces done for the project.
No backup, and no safety net. Won’t you join me?
