Large scale conceptual Ambrotypes that feature young artists who have made tangible sacrifices in the pursuit of their craft.
By supporting the creation of this Ambrotype series, you're showing your belief and support in us, your belief in these struggling creatives, and playing your own role in the ambitious creation of some of the worlds largest Ambrotypes. Any support at this precarious point in all of our journeys, gives us that little extra push we need to keep moving forward. Any support at all helps, thank you!
“We’re interested in revealing the suffering behind the creative process, and portraying it in a very personal and conceptual way. The use of glass Ambrotypes reflects upon the fragile artist psyche and represents the delicate creative spirit that exists in us all.” – Dan and Nicole
What we're doing:
The project features creatives from varying disciplines who have made tangible sacrifices in the pursuit of their craft. We're interested in telling their unique stories in our own creative way. These photographs are printed using the wet plate collodion process, a process developed in the 1850s that produces glass negatives that are then painted black to become positive images. By marrying modern technology with a historic process we will be creating some of the largest Ambrotypes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrotype) ever made.

Why we need help:
In the last 30 days we’ve scrimped and saved and have put $2,500 towards the “Execution” project. We’ve built a home darkroom, photographed 5 subjects, and created a 20.5x23.5 inch ambrotype as well as 6 additional small glass Carte de Visites specifically to show in this kickstarter. We honestly need about $7,500 to fund the creation of the 15 large- scale ambrotypes that we envision for the eventual gallery show, but are asking for $6,000 as a minimum.
Most of the photographs you see in the video are digital (except the two self portrait examples), we need your help in order to output the images onto the wet plate collodion medium, in the form that they are intended to be. Since creating such large glass Ambrotypes involves a process that is so expensive and technical, we can’t complete it without your help.
What we need the funding for:
$5,000 for Equipment, Safety Gear, Props, special ordered ¼ thick 24x30 inch Clear Glass, Marketing, Digital Negatives, Framing/Hanging, and Travel
$1,000 for additional chemicals (collodion, developer, fixer, varnish, acetic acid, silver nitrate, etc)
$1,500 for Art Show Expenses (Ambrotype book, Engraved Card Holders for glass Carte de Visites, catering, etc)
How you can help the project grow, even without donating:
Equally as, if not more, important is the fact that we need YOUR help in finding new people to feature; creatives who have their own unique struggles and stories. So far we’ve shot musicians, writers, actors, and photographers. We’re interested in revealing the suffering behind the creative process, and portraying it in a very personal and conceptual way. We want this project to evolve over time, and keep in touch with each artist we've featured and have constant updates to our project specific blog. It will be very interesting to see how each person’s story evolves over time. Hopefully this project can help everyone grow, keep everyone motivated, and share these people's stories and work with others who may have not had the opportunity to learn about them otherwise.
These are examples of the large scale Ambrotype, as well as the smaller glass Carte de Visites that we are offering as rewards:
