About this project
This November I will participate in a 4-week residency program at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. It is my first residency and will be an exciting time for me to focus on my studio practice away from city life.
My goal is to use the time to explore new ideas and to create a new drawing installation. My research will focus on French and American art from the 1700s to the late 1800s, specifically the Louis XV period and Rococo. My main project during this residency will be a large-scale installation inspired by painter-designed rooms like the Peacock Room by Whistler and the Fragonard Room at the Frick. I plan to transform the walls of my studio into a similar salon-style interior, named the Eagle Room. Through trompe l'oeil wall drawing made of loose graphite powder and pencil I will flesh out the space of the imagined interior, adding 3-dimensional decorative objects and architectural moldings.
In order to help fund the project, I have already reduced the cost of the residency by 1/3 through a work exchange program with the Vermont Studio Center. The money I raise on Kickstarter will go towards the remaining residency fees, travel expenses, shipping costs, documentation and materials. Any extra money I raise will go towards living expenses and supplies.
I've put together a variety fun incentives for backers:
- personally designed art sticker featuring a flying eagle icon
- a hand-made, limited edition zine with drawings, writings and photos of my time in Johnson, VT. Guaranteed to rock your socks
- a screen-printed canvas tote with the super hot flying eagle icon.
- 3" x 5" work on paper made during the residency
- 8" x 10" work on paper made during the residency
- paintings fresh from my studio
- special mention on my blog artsfarts.org for all backers
- weekly updates on my experience with photos, studio shots, video and...
- my never-ending love and devotion

I will mail all rewards no later than December 13th, just in time for the holidays!
Thanks for all your support.

The room was original designed to show off the China collection of the art collector Fredrick R Leyland. During its design, James Whistler was asked to touch up the paint to better match the walls to one of his paintings that was hanging in the room. Leyland came back to find his room altered and an epic battle ensued. Here's a great explanation of the Peacock Room's sordid history : http://www.asia.si.edu/exhibitions/online/peacock/default.htm

Artist's statement
Through painting, drawing and sculpture, Sarah Thibault combines her interests in the spectacle of commerce, ideas surrounding the aesthetics of power and the hedonism of being a painter. Through a representation of French and American motifs, she investigates the boundaries of novelty, individuality and commercial appeal within the tradition of painting.
