This Brooklyn based composer's collective is producing a concert of works written in the last decade for ensembles of up to 8 cellos.
HELLO EVERYONE!
Thank you so much for visiting our Kickstarter page and considering a donation to our campaign. We are a group of Brooklyn based composers engaged in creating music and committed to exploring the relevance of live music to our changing modern world.
We are raising money to fund our fifth concert focused exclusively on music for the cello written within the last decade. We have NINE pieces on the program for ensembles including FIVE premieres of up to EIGHT cellos and it is scheduled to happen on June EIGHTH at the 92Y Tribeca.
THE PROGRAM –
Cello Counterpoint – Steve Reich
Empty City – Yoav Shemesh
Light is Calling – Michael Gordon
Traveller – Tim Hansen
777 (nothing is true, everything is permitted) – John Zorn
Canon Prelude – Matt Frey
Ice Covers the North – Brooke Campbell
Three Programmatic Duos – Robert Karpay
The Reserved, the Reticent – Sarah Kirkland Snider
WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES:
Cellists! Our biggest expense by far is our wonderful performers. The 8 of them together represent 146 years of education! What!? These people deserve some money for their professional commitment to our concert.
Rehearsal space – The constant plague of musicians in cramped cities everywhere – what room will fit 8 cellist and a conductor?
Technical stuff – While the 92Y Tribeca takes care of a lot of what we need, we want a professional recording of the performance. Mostly to share with all of you lovely people!
Score rental – Since a few of the pieces we are presenting are owned by publishers, we need to pay fees for renting the score. This money we pay to the publisher also filters down to the composers in the long run. We are all for that!
Other stuff – Printing costs for posters and fliers, pizza for our crew putting in long hours on the day of the concert, the last minute trip for batteries that we forgot to account for. Plus, kickstarter and amazon.com take a (admirably small) amount off of whatever we make.
IT DOESN'T STOP THERE!
In order to create a sustainable model for our future, we want to change the way we do things.
For our last four concerts we have paid all the expenses for a concert out of our own pockets and then reimbursed ourselves (well, partially reimbursed ourselves…) out of ticket proceeds while putting a priority on giving most of the money from ticket sales to our performers. Even with huge crowds and incredibly successful concerts we have hardly been able to give our musicians enough money for a cab ride home and never have been able to carry money forward to the next project. BUT WITH YOUR HELP we plan on changing that model! We want to use the money we raise here to pay for the costs of putting on our cello concert so that this time we can apply proceeds from the ticket sales toward our next concert. We are so excited and motivated to continue growing our collective and expanding its possibilities that we want to make sure we are doing it in a way that is healthy and sustainable for many years to come. In fact, we have already started the process of becoming a for-real legitimate non-profit organization. It is going to take us some time to get there and many funding opportunities won't be available to us until we have all our paper work in order.
OUR MISSION
As an organization, our mission is to promote new music and its musicians working in the classical tradition. We want to widen the reach of music that challenges and enriches its audience and creators. Come join our family!
