Ben and Josh agree to help raise awareness about a marriage amendment, but become entangled in more than just a political issue.
BOOM! Theater is the brainchild of playwright Gemma Irish and actor Patrick Kozicky. They wanted to create original shows inspired by relevant social topics, and influenced by their artistic collaborators. BOOM! Theater also wants to make theater approachable and accessible to everyone. Along the way, Gemma and Patrick somehow convinced these two cool cats, Dave and Shane, to help them out. All four partners have been working hard on BOOM! Theater's inaugural production, the world premiere of a new play entitled Engaged.
Engaged deals with a number of questions: What is marriage? Does it mean the same thing to everyone? Who should get to choose who can marry - or have the choice not to marry? By questioning a constitutional amendment that takes away the right of an individual couple to choose (or not choose) marriage, we rock our very understanding of this "institution."
Engaged is centered around longtime couple Ben and Josh who, over dinner with friends, agree to help raise awareness about an upcoming marriage amendment. But they become entangled in more than just a political issue. Misunderstandings and insecurities surface, friends new and old are pulled into the fray, insults and food get thrown, and the very institution of marriage is called into question as these two men fight for the right to love who they love.
Engaged is the perfect title for our first production. Because BOOM! Theater wants you engaged... engaged with our story, engaged with our characters, and engaged with your community. No longer will we be a passive society... we will be Engaged.
