My public art installation Prayer Flags - Breath has been invited to be part of ArtPrize 2011 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Prayer Flags - Breath is a public art installation of hand-pulled block prints on hand-painted cotton cloth. Inspired by traditional Tibetan prayer flags, abstract images of lungs represent the breath, the basis of all prayer.
I have been invited to bring Prayer Flags - Breath to Grand Rapids, Michigan for ArtPrize 2011. For two weeks the city of Grand Rapids turns into one large art exhibition focusing on community and bringing art into public spaces.
Because Prayer Flags - Breath adapts uniquely to each new space, I will need to travel with the work for the site-specific installation.
As a reward for backing this project, for the first time I am offering portions of Prayer Flags - Breath. Each flag is hand-painted and block printed by me. If you donate at the $20 level a single flag will come on a short string for hanging. (You may also frame the individual flags if you wish.) If you donate at the $50 level or above you will receive a roll of flags containing five flags on a string ready to hang. These flags have not been previously available for private ownership.
If you donate at the $75 level or above, my traveling companion and I will fill out a postcard from Grand Rapids for you. (In addition to receiving the photo and flags.)
If you donate at the $200 level I will create an original and personalized work of mail art for you while I'm in Grand Rapids. (In addition to receiving the photo, 2 rolls of flags, and a postcard.)
If you fund the entire project you will receive your own installation of Prayer Flags - Breath in a specially designed box for storage. (In addition to receiving the photo, the postcard, and a personalized work of mail art.) And, of course, my sincerest gratitude for guaranteeing that public art such as this can be completed!
The $850 goal is the minimum amount to cover the expenses of getting this work (and myself to install it) to Michigan. A friend of mine has generously agreed to join me on the 12 hour drive to Grand Rapids from Kansas City. Anything above the goal will help defray their costs as well as fund future installations of this work.
