Sarah Trueworthy, 13, solves 3 local animal-related mysteries, leading adults to think & act differently about animals & sustainability
OUR MOTIVATION (JUST A FEW FACTS):
- An estimated 50,000 feral cats in Detroit alone need trapping and spaying.
- Polar bears and other animals and plants across the globe face the threat of extinction as climate change appears to have all but taken hold. (CO2 measurement in the Arctic has reached 400 PPM!!!!!)
- Human cancer rates, pesticide usage, and draw-down of water tables are at all-time highs.
- Teens and young adults across the globe search for outlets for their energy, creativity, and altruistic instincts.
- The list goes on...
OUR ULTIMATE GOAL:
To Teach Our Kids to Know that We Can All Make a Difference – Now
We want to look back and say that we did all we could to help leave to our children a vibrant and healthy planet capable of sustaining life for coming generations. We must become more proactive and do all we can to make it so. And to accomplish this, we need to make concerted, systematic efforts to engage our teens and the young adults of the world, to convince them during their formative years that what they think and do matters, that by demanding our attention and response, they can help Make a Real Difference -- Now -- yes, even while they are young. Our children may even BE the Difference.
THIS COMPREHENSIVE PROJECT HAS IT ALL:
- The Book
- The Film
- The National 501(c)(3) Org.
- Great Humor
- Great Villains & Heroes
- Realistic, Evil Bio-terrorists
- Factually Accurate, International Exotic Pet Smuggling Rings
- Last but not least – Animal Rescue as Inspiration for Us All!
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The project which we need your help with at this time is a young person's NOVEL that will precede the film, to be published both as an eBook and in traditional hardback form. The novel aspires to be not just an exceptional and inspiring read -- an enduring literary classic in the tradition of Twain and Dickens -- but also, and most crucially, motivation for our youth to become actively engaged in our global pursuit of sustainability for planet Earth.
These ambitious goals are more than merely inspirational; the premise underlying our strategy is as profound as it is simple: Our youth are more than merely our beneficiaries, they are themselves vital resources essential to our planet’s health. We need their participation. Kids are more than a component of our planetary self-healing effort -- our kids ARE The Difference! Waiting for adults around the world to effect change without the infusion of the wisdom and inspiration and energy of our youth is a tragic mistake. It will not be, nor has it ever been, sufficient to ignore our children as resources. And today, our survival has come to depend on preparing and then relying on their inspired stewardship.
WHO ARE THE CREATORS OF THIS PROJECT?
Our project team is a superlative group, and includes the following:
Fraser Hubbard and his brother Tim grew up in the Deep South, where they were raised on the grand old style of story–telling, and where they spent countless hours, like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, cultivating boundless inventive imaginations so often seen lacking in today’s intellectually malnourished youth. We know well the pleasures of a great story and great story–telling; these were the birthright of all children, we thought. And yet, sadly after decades in education and film and law, we see more and more, along with the erosion of our rainforests and beaches, the equally tragic erosion of our youth’s imaginations. As Carl Jung has said, “Without this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt we owe to the play of the imagination is incalculable.”
The gift to our children of this imaginative elan vital which we so blithely took for granted in our formative years is overdue, not because we owe it to them, but because we owe it to ourselves. As Einstein once said: “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."
•The Writer: Fraser Hubbard has been a teacher of English Literature and Creative Writing at the college, AP, and High School levels for over 30 years. After a brief law career, he entered education in order to encourage and nurture young people's curiosity, and to write. He earned his BA in English from the University of Virginia and his law degree from the University of S. Carolina. He holds an MA in English from Georgetown where he earned a 4.0 and published the first part of an autobiographical novel as his Master's Thesis, the first and only (he was told) creative Master's Thesis accepted for publication in the school's history. Fraser is also a poet, freelance journalist and arts critic, and technical writer and editor. He has chaired English Departments, founded and directed Writing Centers, and sponsored student literary societies. He also remains a licensed Maryland Attorney and Mediator.
•The Business Manager and Editor: Tim Hubbard brings to the Project expertise in environmental conservation, film production, scriptwriting and editing, and publishing. He recently co–founded a publishing and editorial services company which recently published its first book and which he hopes to expand to include young people’s literature.
•We have lined up an extraordinary artist to illustrate the book and intend for the illustrations themselves to be collectible.
While unsuccessfully looking for her lost cat inherited from her late mother, our heroine, Sarah, 13, along with her older brother and his colorful cronies, learns of disgraceful, callous indifference and shameful, inhumane treatment of the local feral cat population. Sarah and her brother and friends decide with due deliberation that they must act on behalf of this besieged cat population.
Sarah, her big brother and their entourage embark on a series of harrowing misadventures and crime–solving exploits, leading them perilously close to mortal danger, as they innocently commit to establishing their own, kids–run animal rescue shelter. Journeying into the dark underworld of international crime and intrigue, where espionage and criminality are routine, Sarah blossoms as a leader and even an intuitive prodigy of sorts, never losing her idealistic vision of a healthy planet. Acquiring bravery and selflessness beyond her years, she evolves in the heroic tradition, through adversity, into a first–rate sleuth, unafraid to follow her hunches. Finally, she and her band of friends will have visibly and tangibly, albeit inadvertently, become leaders in the strategic use of collective, creative problem–solving, providing a prototype even for the modern, adult world, a world which, by the novel’s end, must sit up and take notice.
(Oh, and yes, they eventually do find Jumanji.)
The inspirational message of the novel (and the film which is to follow) will be that young people matter, that baby steps are crucial, that little things mean a lot, that individual efforts do matter, that acting locally and thinking globally really do make the difference, and that, above all, young people not only can serve as symbols in literature, but as leaders, even heroes, in the real world.
As William Wordsworth, the great British Romantic, penned prophetically in 1875:
“The Child is Father of the Man.”
The epilogue of the novel will reveal that these normal kids’ once humble (and illicit) animal rescue and shelter organization has now evolved today – in the real world – into a global network of local chapters serving the needs of animals in need everywhere, and is being run by Kids all over the Planet! (It is our hope and conviction that this happy ending will not be limited to the book/film! :)
This book, for which we are seeking your support, will serve as the foundation for a series of books using the characters of this first story. Recent research indicates that young "resistant readers" are responding positively to eBooks and we will ride that trend and strive to maximize the book’s distribution on eBook platforms to encourage its reading by as broad a population of young people around the globe as possible.
Our vision for this book project is to produce a fun, riveting, inspiring, values–driven, motivating, and readable book that parallels the movie and tells the heroic story of kids seeking their place while helping to find a solution to one of society’s looming problems – how we treat animals as pets, as sources of protein, and as sources of amusement and ultimately how we help all animals, including humans, sustain a life on this planet – the only one we have.
We can complete this initial book–writing leg of our overall project in the next 70–100 days. Though our objective is to accomplish our mission on a shoestring, we will incur expenses, including paying illustrators, professional editors, and creative designers for the layout of the book. Any funds generated over and above producing the book will be reallocated into the companion film project, along with the organizational outreach projects. This is a team project that, with your help, is to be of the kids, by the kids, and for the kids.
Please help us and our growing staff of volunteers to push this project to its conclusion because we know it can and will make an impact not only on the care and shelter of animals everywhere, but also on the lives and awareness of young people across the planet... Dare to dream big enough with us – and Care enough to care small .... Because little things really do mean a lot!!! Just Share.
Our willingness to share – to support such worthy causes – may well determine our survival.
Indeed, our very planet may hang in the balance.
As the poet says: The Child is Father of the Man!
