What the Documentary is About
Similar to going on a journey to explore an unknown territory, TransJourney explores three women’s personal journeys and the ways that their lives have become intertwined, and made stronger, because of each other. Three years ago Annabelle (who lives in Seattle), was identified as a male at birth, came out to her family and friends as female and began her transition towards life as a woman. We will delve into her new world. We will also gain insight into how Sandra (Annabelle's mom, who lives in Rhode Island) copes with this life-altering event and strives to remain an integral part of her daughter's new world -- 3,000 miles away!
Shannon, an older transgendered woman, who also lives near Seattle, has become friends with Sandra since Shannon provided guidance on how to care for Annabelle after her gender confirmation surgery. Now Shannon is preparing for her own gender confirmation surgery, but struggles with illness as well as sexual discrimination.
For many there is a price to be paid, a very steep price. Some do not survive the journey and they take their lives, for retracing their steps is not possible. Others abandon the journey as the rocks are too steep to navigate and it's easy to flounder, or it simply costs them too much in terms of family, jobs, and respect in the communities in which they live.
Consider these questions…… How do you define yourself? What is Your IDENTITY? Who are you? What are you? Are you loved and accepted for who you are? Are there others like you? Do you know anyone in your life who is Transgender?
TransJourney embodies all of our stories—as we search for acceptance and affirmation.
Our film crew will travel out to Seattle with Sandra and stay for ten days to film Sandra and Shannon’s first meeting and to chronicle the transgender world of Annabelle and Shannon.
The transgender world remains mostly invisible to larger society and even to some members of the LGBT community. TransJourney voices transgender people’s hopes, desires and, fears, while looking deeply into their worlds, demystifying their lives, and more importantly, bringing dignity to their experiences. When TransJourney is finished, the documentary we hope to premiere the documentary at the Boston LGBTQ Film Festival (projected for May 2013); the Northwest premiere at the Seattle Gay and the Lesbian Film Festival (Oct 2013). TransJourney will travel around the country and it will be screened at universities and colleges throughout the United States.
Why We Need Your Support
Filming is expensive. Your support will enable us to travel with our film crew to Seattle, help pay for production costs including transportation, lodging, meals, travel and the purchase of a new HD camera (a Canon EOS Mark III) necessary to make our film competitive in film festivals. Yet this is only the first leg of the film's journey as we still face post-production costs. Your help, (with whatever you can contribute), makes the difference with whether this film is viewed in film festivals and colleges and in LGBTQ centers around the country and perhaps even the world. Shifting Visions is a 501 (c) (3) film company so all of your donations supporting TransJourney are also tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by the IRS.
Why is this film important?
TransJourney speaks to all of our desires to receive affirmation and to explore new borders whether it’s with existing family members or with new acquaintances whom we embrace in our life. I believe that TransJourney will enable all individuals to see themselves and others differently, and will inspire many not to be afraid to be themselves, whatever they choose to be.
I’m new to Kickstarter. How does it work?
When you make a pledge, you become a backer of my documentary film, TransJourney, and will receive neat rewards based upon the amount pledged. Your financial support, no matter the amount, will make a difference as to whether or not this film gets produced. If I don’t reach my goal by the deadline, I get nothing; and your account will not be charged. It’s all or nothing. We want to avoid this scenario at all costs! If I do reach or surpass my goal by the deadline, your account will be charged; and I will receive the total amount pledged, less any fees charged by Kickstarter and Amazon so our TransJourney can begin!
Who does the money go to?The money will go directly to the TransJourney budget to fund this film!
To pledge to TransJourney, just click the green “Back This Project” button on the TransJourney page. You will be asked to enter your pledge amount and select a reward. From there, you will go through the Amazon checkout process. Note that you must finish the Amazon checkout process for your pledge to be recorded.
If I make a pledge, when is my card charged?
If TransJourney is successfully funded, your card will be charged when TransJourney reaches its funding deadline. If TransJourney does not reach its funding goal, your card will not be charged.
How else can I support this film?
Any form of support is greatly appreciated and will be extremely helpful. Please help spread the word about TransJourney to people who you feel may be interested in taking part in our journey by backing our film.
Can people from outside the U.S. pledge to projects?
Yes! Anyone, anywhere (with a major credit card) can pledge to Kickstarter projects, including TransJourney. To those OUTSIDE the continental U.S. donating $50 or more, please add $10to your donation for shipping costs.
Can I increase my pledge once it has been made?
YES! Once you donate to TransJourney, you may want to increase your pledge amount or change your reward to a different one. Visit the TransJourney page and click “Manage Your Pledge.” Enter a new amount in the pledge amount box. Note that you are not adding to your existing pledge; the amount you enter will be the total amount collected if the project is successfully funded.
What do I do if I have questions about a project?
Ask the creator! At the bottom of the TransJourney page there’s an “Ask a Question” button. This will send your question directly to me, Alexia Kosmider.
If you are already a backer of TransJourney and you would like to make your question public, you can post a comment on my project. I will be notified by email when you do.
What if I don’t want the reward?
No problem, there is a button that you can select if you do not want the reward.
Can I give my reward to someone else as a gift? YES!
Can you exceed the goal?
YES! That would be awesome! Kickstarter will allow us to receive as much money as is pledged before the deadline, as long as we meet or exceed the initial goal. Our own journey has only just begun with TransJourney and we are truly grateful for any and all financial assistance we receive.
If you reach your goal, what will you do with additional funding pledged above any beyond that?
We were very conservative in setting our initial goal. We requested the bare minimum necessary to cover the initial production costs of TransJourney. Any excess funding will go a very long way to help us create a high quality film and pay for post-production costs. We need funds to pay for editing, sound design and mix, color correction, and authoring of the film (with a conservative estimate from our post production studio at approximately $12,000). Any additional funding will help ensure that TransJourney gets the most exposure possible. We plan to premiere TransJourney at the Boston LGBT Film Festival in May 2013 and later at the Seattle LGBT Film Festival in October, 2013. Our goal is to screen TransJourney at film festivals and colleges and universities throughout the United States. As a result, we are continuing to raise funds to cover the costs of submitting to film festivals, marketing the film, and all related travel. Ideally, we would like to raise even more than our goal which will go towards making the film that much more successful. Additional funding will help us pay for marketing costs, festival costs, and ultimately greatly increase our production value.
If I donate, when can I redeem my reward?
All rewards will only be granted if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, immediately after our deadline we will contact you to start the process. Some rewards are related to the completion of the film and thus will take a little time. Please bear with us!
Is my pledge amount publicly displayed?
No, only you and the project creator will be able to see your pledge amount.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes! Shifting Visions is a 501 (c) (3) film company, so all of your donations supporting TransJourney are also tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by the IRS.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
