3TON IS A UNIQUE ARCHIVE OF EPHEMERAL 16MM FILMS. HELP US RELOCATE AND SHARE OUR FANTASTIC STACKS!
At the end of this month, 3TON must move out of its current space. This means that 1200 cans of 16MM film (Jetsons episodes, Cold War newsreels, rare documentary shorts, educational movies, vintage PSAs...) are endangered. Without your financial support we cannot continue to properly store this fascinating collection.
BACKGROUND: The 3TON archive is a storehouse for ephemeral 16MM films. It currently resides at 16 Sherman Street in San Francisco, a long-time base for independent film artists which has also been a headquarters to the New Nothing Cinema, Douglas Katelus, Rock Ross Credits and Titles, and the late Robert Nelson. 3TON has been honored to share a home with such cinema heavyweights, but our space there has proven too small for our needs. To relocate our stacks, and to do the full inventory, appraisal, and LAUNCH that a larger space will allow, we need your assistance.
When properly stored, 16MM film is a more durable and reliable archival medium than any of today's digital formats! WITH YOUR HELP we can continue to maintain a space for these reels, make full creative use of their contents, and share them with the public (–YOU!). We are proud to be part of a small international network who have stuck with 16MM. Our work is directly inspired by Craig Baldwin's Other Cinema, Stephen Parr's Oddball/SFMA, and the annual Orphans Symposium.
ABOUT THE 3TON CO-FOUNDERS: Monty Cantsin has worked as a research assistant for found-footage filmmakers such as Ben Rivers and Bill Morrison, and his writing on film has appeared in Cineaste Magazine. In 2009/2010 he was a Scholar-in-Residence at the Prelinger Library. L.A.'s Fragenord Berscht has been published in Craig Baldwin's Otherzine and can often be seen as a VJ at electronic music events all around Southern California. His dazzling video projections and animated GIFs–shown under the name V1DE0_D1AB3T3S–often make use of archival footage.

NOTE: For publicizing this preservation initiative, and for future digitization efforts (aimed at increasing public access to 16MM films), 3TON has gained the support of a Manhattan-based tech startup, IB5k. A civically-minded digital media conglomerate with a network of over 3,000 creatives (–Schmooru), IB5k "seeks to improve creative spaces"–and "cannot conceive of a better method than aiding 3TON as an infrastructure provider."
Since 2010 3TON has exhibited at: 16 BEAVER GROUP (Manhattan), THE SPECTACLE (Brooklyn), THE CHARLESTON (Brooklyn), PEHR SPACE (Los Angeles), BARRY MACGREGOR JOHNSTON'S (los angeles), BLACK HOLE CINEMATHEQUE (Oakland), LAYOVER LOUNGE (Oakland), LONGHAUL INFOSHOP (Berkeley), SOMARTS CULTURAL CENTER (San Francisco), 5LOWERSHOP WAREHOUSE (San Francisco), NEW NOTHING CINEMA (San Francisco), LE VOYEUR (Olympia), BIBLIOTECA POPULAR (Chicago), WOMAN MADE GALLERY (Chicago), MORTVILLE WAREHOUSE (Chicago), THE DUST BOWL (Chicago), MOST WANTED FINE ARTS (Pittsburgh), M ROOM (Philadelphia), FAR HOUSE (Ann Arbor), 111 ARTS (Muncie), BLACK BEAR BAKERY (Saint Louis), RAINBOW BOOKS (Madison, WI), AMBROSIA (Madison, WI), CREAM CITY COLLECTIVES (Milwaukee, WI), BOXCAR BOOKS (Bloomington, IN), RAGTAG CINEMA (Columbia, MO), SHARED HERITAGE GALLERY (Indianapolis), MELT HOUSE (Indianapolis), CLUB 1808 (Austin), CABLE CAR CINEMA (Providence), and elsewhere!
