The Five of Wands and the Prince of Cups
Hi all! It's been a couple of weeks since my last update, so I have a lot of new stuff to report.
The Five of Wands: Strife
First off, I just this very night finally finished this card, after having it sitting around in partial progress for weeks. It was... well, a struggle. Which seems appropriate for the card. First, I had to struggle to get the reference I needed, which took two different photo shoots (Thanks again to Elliot Gerard and Kate Bryant for posing). Then I gathered reference at a sports bar that I ended up basically throwing out. And I spent an inordinate amount of time this evening fiddling with those tiny depictions of Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium in the TV screens at the top.
The Five of Wands, like all the fives of the tarot, is about shaking up the static complacency of the fours. In the Wands, Completion leads to Strife - competition, contest, battle, different factions clashing with each other. It's easy to see the negatives of the card, but there are positives as well - competition and strife can lead us to better ourselves, to overcome and grow. As you may recall, it leads directly to the Six: Victory.
I thought the relation to sports, and baseball specifically, was a strong one. If you look at the Rider-Waite version of this card, you'll see five men, each in a different brightly-colored outfit, swinging long sticks at each other. Wands, sticks, bats. Same difference.

Shooting the Prince of Cups
Rob Burke came into town this week to pose as The Filmmaker. It was great meeting him for the first time for this shoot. Although I think he was a little nervous about it, he turned out to be really photogenic. Imagine him standing in an empty movie theatre, his own work projected onto the screen in front of him as he watches with a critical, detached eye. Take a look at some of the shots in this series - the look on his face is just spot on. He almost shaved that little beard off before coming by. I'm glad I convinced him to keep it - it works nicely with the character I was trying to create.

The Spreadcloths in Silk
I got the first couple of sample yards of the printed silk for the spreadcloths this week. The design is 20" x 24" so they come six to every two yards of fabric. I think it came out really lovely - the blue of the water is particularly nice when it shimmers in sunlight. I laid out a celtic cross spread on it, just to see and it fits very nicely onto the spaces I worked into the design. I just want to trim and finish a few of these and make sure everything looks right and we are certain of what we're doing before I order all the rest of the fabric.

I've incidentally also ordered a sample of the velvet tarot bags from overseas - I should have that in my hands for evaluation by next week!

The pictures you put up with the spreadcloth look fantastic. The five of wands looks great as well (it took me a few minutes to realize the fifth wand was on a broken bat; brilliant work on sneaking in that bit of detail).
