Jumbo-Copper-Token-ology

Update #6 · Jul 26, 2012 · 10 comments

Well, fiddle dee dah. I thought I'd posted the relevant details, but in looking backwards, I do not see any such info. So, let me tell y'all now what I had only imagined I had told you. :/

If you are already backing at a level that will entitle you to complimentary JumboGems, you may add the blank copper arcade tokens for $2 per set of JumboGems. If by any chance you have already purchased JumboGems before this project, but you haven't stuck them down to anything yet, you can add a set of eight token blanks for $2 per set. If you want to add more than two sets of just the blanks, though, it might change your shipping costs.

Last night I finally got my hands on my blank token samples, by the way. The blanks (technically, the planchets) have an oddly sloped perimeter, so the JumboGem labels are either a teensy bit too small, or a teensy bit too large, for a completely perfect fit. It just means you have to take a little bit more care when applying the label. I got a couple of my test JumboGems a little bit off-center at first. I just pried the label up, re-centered it, and tapped it down. Just make sure you're happy with the position before you press the edges down. The smooth surface makes an excellent contact patch, so once you squeeze it, that label's gonna hang on tight.

Ah, that worked better than expected. Thanks.

@Ross: Presumably, one edge of the label is hanging off the edge of the coin. If you've got adequate fingernails, just gently slide it in between the overhang and the coin. You would have to attack it with a blade before there's any chance it won't come off in one piece. The only reason to be gentle is to avoid denting or nicking the edge. Once you get the edge lifted, you'll probably have to supply a bit more force to actually get it to pop off the coin, but as long as you're lifting it through the fatter part of the label, it's not gonna come apart. If it does, I'll send you a replacement.

@Ross, I've had success repositioning within 24 hours of label application. After that, I *suspect* but don't know for a fact that you're going to have a hard time removing it from the coin. The vinyl is pretty strong and so is the glue, but I don't know how it does with a repositioning after days or weeks. They do nicely survive the washer AND dryer, though! :-)

Kind of on-topic: I havea Jumbo gem on a quarter on which one label is off-center by a good couple of millimetres. I'm really not sure how it hapened, but it's too much to just ignore.

How would you recommned I remove it and re-position it without damaging the label? I'm kind of scared to try anything because I'm not sure it'll come off on one piece...

@Jac: Oo! That's a good question. Yes, I should def. include a blank with the samplers. So I wlll.

@Matthew: the blanks are described in Update #3 (under "Jumbos for All").

If we are getting a sampler, are we going to get the blanks? or could we add them?

Did I miss the description of the "blank copper arcade tokens" somewhere. My mind is conjuring up an image, but I'm not sure I'm correct.

Excellent. I've thrown in the pledge for four sets of the tokens, plus shipping. When Julia works out how much the pennies will bump it up, I'll add that in (Or PayPal you afterwards if she works it out once the thing closes :))

Twenty-five sheets of PennyGems with option to expand. Additional sheets of PennyGems will be $7.75 each. If you wanted, for example, 40 sheets, that means fifteen sheets more than the 25 that are included for $200. 15 sheets times $7.75/sheet = $116.25 above the $200 for this level, or a total pledge of $316.25 for 40 sheets. This level also includes four sets of JumboGems.
