My next book: the Mexpat dance memoir

In 2007, I went to Oaxaca, Mexico for six life-changing weeks. I discovered Zipolite, a small beach town built by expat hippies in the '70s, and Gloria's Shambhala, an ashram built into the side of a mountain. I didn't stay there at the time, but have dreamed of it ever since. I have finally decided to move there for nine months.
In Oaxaca, I wrote my first book, Loud in the House of Myself, a memoir which was purchased by W.W. Norton. It is the story of escaping my Southern Baptist upbringing by moving to NYC and becoming a tattooed lady; of the transition from strange girl to fearless woman. What I plan to do what at Shambala is teach Tribal Fusion Bellydance in exchange for room, board, and a spiritual yoga journey of my own. And, of course, write my second book, a memoir of the experience. In my first few months in Mexico, I will craft the proposal and send it to my editor at Norton.
I am asking for $1800, out of which I will buy my plane ticket and the first three months at Shambhala. During these three months, I will post blog entries with videos every few days. Contributors to the cause will receive access to this blog, which for the first three months will be members-only. If more funding is received, it will be applied toward additional months at Shambhala and months of members-only content. Donations of over $100 receive exclusive videos shot on film with my Super 8 cameras.
