Traveling exhibition for an ongoing photographic project between two Colombian artists who share a love for cities + language.
Aquí está la descripción del proyecto, en español:
Description du project, en français:
Since 2008 we, Klaus Fruchtnis and Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo, have been working on Cross Urban, in which we pick a word a week and produce one or several images in response. We now have over 100 pairs, taken in over 15 cities around the world, and are ready to produce Itinerant Cross Urban, a traveling exhibition (with accompanying public programs) and a book of the first 100 pairs.
We've now joined forces with Estefanía Sokoloff, an art curator in Bogotá, Jimena Peña, an art curator in Madrid, and Jimena Jara, a PR and communications expert in Paris, to launch Itinerant Cross Urban. Our multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team is engaged with innovative ways of producing projects inside the art market. We are an inclusive group and welcome your input and participation. We are open to new ideas and collaborations with other artists, and hope to explore all of these ideas through Itinerant Cross Urban.

WHAT WE WANT TO DO
Exhibition
In partnership with Colombian consulates, embassies, and educational partners, we are organizing a six-city traveling exhibition. The cities are
Paris (Klaus has lived and worked in Paris for over 12 years.
This city has continually protagonized his work and research about space
and the urban landscape);
New York (Cynthia has lived and worked in New York City since
1999. This residence has motivated her interest, through photography and
video, on urban space, and gives her the perfect laboratory to explore
her interest in urban times - from the chaos of Times Square to the
peacefulness in parks. Many of her Cross Urban photos are taken in
Manhattan y Brooklyn, capturing details from urban everyday life which
complement the collective imaginary of NYC); London (A city in
which the artists have experienced a bit in the past, but mainly
inspires our work because of its urban and social spaces); Madrid
(Considered the gateway for Latin Americans in Europe. We're interested
in the familiarity as well as cultural contrasts from our roots and
native tongue. It's also the residence of one our curators, Jimena
Peña); Tokyo (Klaus lived and worked in this city for two years.
This was enough time to become soaked in the urban chaos and
effervescence that a city such as this one can give an artist. Many of
Klaus' photographs were taken in Japan, a mix between tradition and
futurism); and Bogotá (Hometown of the artists and two curators.
This city will exhibit the roaming this project will have during 12
months. Estefanía Sokoloff, one of our curators, and who's been
following the project since it started, lives and works in Bogotá.)

Public Programs
In addition to artists, we are both also educators with extensive
teaching experiences in New York, Bogotá, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow and
Dominican Republic. With each exhibition, we will plan at least one
participatory workshop with local artists, in which we will engage them
in our project's methodology. We will also run free urban photography
workshops with local students.
Catalogs
In each city we will publish a catalog containing the works curated by Estefanía and Jimena for that city. The publication will have the words in english and the local city's language, as well as a reference of the cities in which
they were photographed.

Book
We have a 2009 book prototype which we self-published, and we hope to publish a new book at the end of our project. This Cross Urban book would catalog the first 100 words
(200 images in total), the words in english, and the cities in which
they were photographed. We see this as the first book of an ongoing
project, which continues even as this campaign is running. We hope to, throughout the year of this project, find editorial and corporate partners with whom we'll be able to create this publication.
HOW WE PLAN TO DO IT
We are a team of Colombians, based in four different cities (New York, Paris, Madrid, and Bogotá), so, naturally, Skype and Google Docs have become our best friends. We are launching the project in Paris with the support of the Colombian Consulate and Embassy as well as of Parsons The New School for Design and are building our connections in other consulates, embassies, and cultural institutions in the other cities.
