About this project
TRUTH, the premiere of a new folk opera about the life of Sojourner Truth
It's hard to believe we are here but we DID create TRUTH and now we are mounting the premiere. It's taken two years and we have raised $30,000 - but we need $10,000 more before February to present the opera. Thank you for getting us this far and please help us get to the finish line. This short movie is made by our friend Niles Larson and has clips from our workshop of Act I this summer.
For our new friends, this is the project: Old Deerfield Productions commissioned TRUTH, a new folk opera about Sojourner Truth, the ex-slave, fiery abolitionist and women’s rights pioneer whom made her home in Northampton, MA. The opera will receive its premiere performances at the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA on February 16, 17, 18, 2012. With full orchestra under the baton of Lanfranco Marcelletti, music direction by Jerry Noble, sets rendered by Amy Johnquest, lights by Lara Dubin and large chorus under the direction of Cathy Bennett,TRUTH will illuminate the life and legacy of this complicated, brilliant woman who, though illiterate, was a relentless and articulate champion of those deprived of justice and freedom, and whose influence has for too long been overlooked.
The score by Paula M. Kimper and libretto by Talaya Delaney are accessible and down-to-earth, much of the music derived from folk themes and spirituals, and many of the words Sojourner’s own. The production will feature Evelyn Harris, former member of the African-American women’s a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, in the title role.
We have created an extensive website: http://truthopera.com/ that tells what we learned about Sojourner Truth and our journey creating the opera.
