Amber Nash and Jordan Neff have been inseparable on and off stage, performing as Shiny and the Spoon-an eclectic, ukulele-centered, folk-pop duo. Jordan insists that he is the "Spoon", although Amber will tell you otherwise.
The duo gives off the warmth and intimacy of the likes of Johnny Cash and June Carter, with originals that are soulful and clever. In a live setting, they're able to quiet a large crowd with haunting, minimal instrumentation and lilting harmonies only to rile the room up again with foot-stomping, a pounding lagerphone, belly-rumbling bluesy vocals, and the occasional rockin' kazoo solo.
Within a few months of making music together, Shiny and the Spoon made a name for themselves in the local Cincinnati music scene. Interviews with Cincinnati's CityBeat Magazine, WNKU, ICN6TV, and Lexington's Red Barn Radio have gotten their sound out to lots of thirsty ears. Their debut EP received rave reviews from multiple sources including AmericanaUK, Call It Folk, and FensePost.
In 2009 Shiny and the Spoon made their Midpoint Music Festival debut where they were deemed a "Cincinnati Bell Ringer" (reserved for "cutting edge bands"). They were also invited to showcase at CityBeat's BRINK New Music Showcase for up-and-coming local bands, and were nominated for a 2009 Cincinnati Entertainment Award for New Artist of the Year.
Nash and Neff continue to draw larger and larger crowds at their local shows and are frequently described in print as a "local favorite," and a "band to watch." It's not uncommon to see the crowd singing along to their favorite songs and calling out for more of those rockin' kazoo solos.
The duo recently became a trio with the addition of Mark Utley (of Magnolia Mountain) on upright bass.
Shiny and the Spoon released their debut EP to a packed house in January of 2010 and are currently working on their first full-length album set to come out in late summer 2011.
Guys, I've just discovered your music while looking for ukulele covers on Youtube, you are awesome ! So the little frog from the other side of the pond is helping in a small way, but I'm a student, sorry I can't do more. I hope you'll get enough backers ! Can't wait to hear the album :)
Cheers from France :)
"Coriander Blues" is a working title, but I hope we keep it. I write lyrics, usually, based from word "sounds" first, if that makes sense. I was trying to come up with a word that would describe "blues," and "coriander" popped into my head. Which is strange...I didn't even really know what coriander was. So it was odd that I just thought of it all of a sudden. I did some internet-ing and I guess it can, to some, represent love, fidelity, and sometimes lust. Which I thought may be appropriate for the blues. Plus, I like the way it sounds. :)
The song is meant to be based loosely on the feeling you get sometimes, as a musician, of playing your heart and with no one listening.
I admit it.
Coriander and me, well... we have quite a bumpy relationship. Let's say, we respect each other, preferably from some distance.
You're song definitely eased that up and allowed me a whole new feeling towards that herb!!
Another gem.
Coriander has long been my favorite spice. I go through a jar a month. Love the stuff and love the song. Keep it comin'!
Shiny, Spoon, you guys are incredibly great. 'Black Nag' alone is worth backing you and your project!
LISTEN UP EVERYBODY!!! Back these fantastic musicians, you'll get SO MUCH in return! Beautiful beautiful music!
Shiny and the Spoon is one of our very favorite groups, even if they did add that wild red head to the mix, and we are excited about this project. Black Nag is a great song!
Wow. Black Nag is a beautiful song. There's a sense of Celtic too it, a bit of Dylan, and nice dash of Johnny Cash. Yet at the same time, it's totally *you*. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous song. Thank you for the gift!
Covering "Take On Me" on ukulele? Now, that is an entertaining concept :)
(And confirming that A-Ha is familiar to people outside Norway is also a good thing.)
Oh, yeah, that was just a cover song - you write your own songs as well, which is kind of the main thing here I guess :)
Just going to figure out a pledge level and I'm going to back you guys.
Dear Amber,
rememeber me? This is Johannes from Germany, and I still LOVE your music in my shortfilm!
I am gonna be a dad this summer, so hurry up with the album already! I want to play your music to my daughter - preferably as long as she's still in that warm and cozy place inside her mom's belly ;) We use these super sized headphones and last night it was Tom Waits singing to our daughter. Let it be you guys real soon, please!
Love the promo video! Can't wait to hear the new album! Best of luck!!!
David! I am SO excited to perform your singing telegram!!!! Hahahahahaha.
Good luck guys. I'm looking forward to hearing the album...!
I REALLY want that singing telegram!!!
