About this project
***NEWS! NEWS! NEWS!!*********
Undying love and thanks to those who have contributed to our fundraiser
through Kickstarter. We made our goal in about 3 weeks and are
currently flirting with an end-result of $4,000! That is our new
goal. Hitting that would mean getting everything we wanted and NOT
having to use band money. From that, we'll have a cushion to promote
the album, send press kits to radio stations, venues, folks to review
it, magazines, newspapers, etc. Which would be GREAT.
So, if you are planning on helping out, you have TWO DAYS. The deadline is May 1st at 10 p.m.
***UPDATE! UPDATE! !***YOU DID IT! Thank you SO much! We are 101% funded and still have 8 days to go! If you were going to contribute, please still do. We will use the extra money for promoting our album, as a cushion for the 10% taken by Kickstarter and Amazon, for shipping the rewards, and to aid in not draining our band fun! We have more "secret" rewards for backers....can't wait! Can't wait! Keep it comin'!
***EXTRA! EXTRA!***Any past and future backers, at any level, will get a link to download "Black Nag," a demo of a track set to be on Ferris Wheel, within 48 hours! Debating on whether to contribute? Give $1, get the track, then go from there:)

FRIENDS, FANS, AND COMPLETE STRANGERS!
We are raising money to record, mix, master, press, and package our FIRST FULL-LENGTH ALBUM, FERRIS WHEEL!!!
Our debut EP (self-titled) in January of 2010 was recorded independently, in our second floor bathroom. While we have no problems singing to toilet seats, we feel it's high time we do it up right and record in a real-life-big-people studio. Plus, you guys deserve it:)
Our album will be 11 original songs (including Thirteen Crates) and two covers ("No Hole In My Head" by Malvina Reynolds and "Take On Me" by a-ha).
In addition to paying our studio and pressing fees, the money will be used to buy the mechanical licenses to record the two covers.
We'll be recording here in Cincinnati with John Curley at the famous Ultrasuede Studios. The album will be mixed and mastered at the same location. It will be pressed and packaged at QCA here in Cincinnati (all local, baby!!!). We're shooting for 1000 copies in an eco-friendly "Digipak."
For those of you who see us play live often, several of the songs on the new album will be familiar...Run, Thirteen Crates, Killin' the Flower, No Hole In My Head, Round the Corners, as well as Black Nag, which was featured on the compilation album for the recent Music for the Mountains project.
Among the familiars will be new tunes with dual guitars, like Bread and Butter.
It's going to rule. Thanks in advance for helping us out!!!

We don't get money. Any of it. Money doesn't come out of your account. Will we still record an album if we don't meet the goal? Probably. You can't keep a good boy down, after all. But we will record it ourselves, and order a much, much smaller amount of CDs...so on.
-
Ooo! Thanks! And...as long as we hit at LEAST $3,500, the money will come out of your account after the May 1st deadline. We'll send reminders to official backers, don't worry.
-
Nope. Not joking. But yeah, we COULD record and release an album for much, much, less. We did it with our EP in January 2010. Here's how the pricing breaks down:
3 days at Ultrasuede studio-$1500
Mastering-approx. $400
1000 pressed and packaged CDs in Digipak from QCA-approx $1250
Licenses for 2 cover songs-approx $330
Also factor in that Kickstarter takes about 5% of the money raised, and Amazon does about the same. We're going to be kicking in as much as possible from our "band fund," as well. -
Well, yes. But not when it comes to the band. A lot of folks don't know this, but we put 100% of what we earn via Shiny and the Spoon RIGHT BACK into the band. We all really do love playing music. And the only way to keep that going, at this point, is to not take any money for ourselves and sometimes, put personal money into it. Promoting yourself, ordering and re-ordering merch, keeping functional equipment...this all costs money. But we do it for love. :)
-
Fo' sho'. In-person or via E-Mail. We have a set list that fits occasions such as birthday, I Love You, I'm sorry, etc....as well as regular Shiny and the Spoon songs that backers will get to choose from. You tell us who it's for, anything you want us to say in particular, and where to go, or who to send it to, and you get an in-person telegram, with all three band members, or, a one-of-a-kind video in the inbox of your choice.
-
Sure! If you live within the specified radius, we come to your place and play at your house, in your back yard, on your porch, in your basement, whatever, for about an hour and a half. We provide a sound system. We bring merch. We'll hang out before and after to talk, hang out, etc. :) :) :)
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.

Amber Nash and Jordan Neff have been inseparable on and off stage, performing as Shiny and the Spoon-an eclectic, ukulele-centered, folk-pop duo. Jordan insists that he is the "Spoon", although Amber will tell you otherwise.
The duo gives off the warmth and intimacy of the likes of Johnny Cash and June Carter, with originals that are soulful and clever. In a live setting, they're able to quiet a large crowd with haunting, minimal instrumentation and lilting harmonies only to rile the room up again with foot-stomping, a pounding lagerphone, belly-rumbling bluesy vocals, and the occasional rockin' kazoo solo.
Within a few months of making music together, Shiny and the Spoon made a name for themselves in the local Cincinnati music scene. Interviews with Cincinnati's CityBeat Magazine, WNKU, ICN6TV, and Lexington's Red Barn Radio have gotten their sound out to lots of thirsty ears. Their debut EP received rave reviews from multiple sources including AmericanaUK, Call It Folk, and FensePost.
In 2009 Shiny and the Spoon made their Midpoint Music Festival debut where they were deemed a "Cincinnati Bell Ringer" (reserved for "cutting edge bands"). They were also invited to showcase at CityBeat's BRINK New Music Showcase for up-and-coming local bands, and were nominated for a 2009 Cincinnati Entertainment Award for New Artist of the Year.
Nash and Neff continue to draw larger and larger crowds at their local shows and are frequently described in print as a "local favorite," and a "band to watch." It's not uncommon to see the crowd singing along to their favorite songs and calling out for more of those rockin' kazoo solos.
The duo recently became a trio with the addition of Mark Utley (of Magnolia Mountain) on upright bass.
Shiny and the Spoon released their debut EP to a packed house in January of 2010 and are currently working on their first full-length album set to come out in late summer 2011.
