Author Faces Up Hill Battle to Get Manuscript Published
Unfortunately the more things change the more they stay the same. But Walt Gavin, the author of The Autobiography of Obsidian Dumar is undeterred. Having come up with the idea for the novel some five years ago the goal remains unchanged. To see the story of a Pulitzer Prize winning author who approaching 60 receives a mysterious letter which starts an epic journey through time, space and culture, in print and on the big screen.
“Getting the mainstream media mavens to accept African American human experience as a viable and marketable commodity is always a challenge,” says Gavin.
According to a missive from Tyler Perry being circulated around the Web, Red Tails, the new film by George Lucas, which opened on January 20th, about a historic slice of American History chronicling the saga of the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII was rejected by all of the Major Hollywood players. So Lucas had to finance and distribute the film himself. Why? Because the conventional wisdom says that “whites,” meaning American audiences won't go to see a film where the majority of the cast is African American. You would have thought Roots, The Saga of An American Family, or The Cosby Show would have laid those ideas to rest. Or that in 2012 when there is an African American in The White House, there might be a change of attitude among media elites. Not!
In his own small way Gavin demonstrated the fallacy of that argument some thirty years ago. At the time MTV wouldn't air music videos of black artists. It wasn't until CBS Records threatened to pull their white acts that Michael Jackson's Billy Jean was allowed into MTV's rotation. Gavin and his partner Bob Lott created the first music video show featuring African American music in commercial TV syndication. The Gavin & Lott Show aired for three years in 75% of the nation and helped spur the production of music videos for black recording artists and bust the myth that white folks can't relate to Africtan American culture.
So now fast forward thirty years and Gavin is at it again. Out to prove that African American human experience sells with all audiences, regardless of their color.
The Autobiography of Obsidian Dumar weaves together a story that is part mystery, part fantasy, part adventure, part history, spanning three continents with a time line that extends from 2500 BCE to the present.
The goal here is to create an audience for the project with a cross-country tour, reading excerpts from the manuscript in advance of the NATPE PitchCon event in early June where the author will "pitch" to studio execs and producers in Hollywood.
Follow the exploits of the author to get the manuscript sold or optioned on Facebook.
