"It happened in the middle of their war and you have scared them, Mr. Reeves. You tore the war open. You have done the unimaginable."
Stuart Mott, a senior at University of Wisconsin-Madison, is producing 9 Circles, the 2010 Steinberg Award-winning play by Bill Cain, for his senior thesis project in March 2013. 9 Circles tells the story of Daniel Reeves, a young soldier from Texas accused of gruesome brutality against civilians during his tour in the Iraq War. As he stumbles through the legal system and seeks support from spiritual and religious counselors, Reeves traverses his own modern-day version of Dante's Inferno as he fights to save his life. At times painful and searing, and at other times wry and humorous, 9 Circles challenges us to confront our complicity in the horrors of war and its after effects.
We seek to provide a professional-level production for audiences and production team members alike. An accomplished undergraduate actor at University of Wisconsin–Madison, Stuart has assembled a team of respected performers and artists who are in the initial stages of their own careers as professional theater artists. This Kickstarter campaign will enable us to produce a high-quality production, with funds going toward the purchase of supplies for sets and costumes, lighting equipment rental, and publicity materials.
Should we be fortunate enough to reach our $2,500 Kickstarter goal, additional contributions are still welcome! Every dollar helps, and funds above and beyond the goal will be used to enhance our existing production plans.
9 Circles will run March 7, 8, and 9, 2013 at 7:30 pm in the Directing Lab at Vilas Hall, University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. To reserve tickets free of charge, please email 9circlestix@gmail.com.

Generous contributions from the University of Wisconsin–Madison Department of Theatre and Drama and the College of Letters & Science Honors Program will also help support this production.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
At UW, senior thesis projects don't usually take the form of fully produced stagings. As a result, we're navigating uncharted territory, and so far we have had tremendous support from the University and specifically the Department of Theatre and Drama. That said, in order to realize this project as we have envisioned it, we need to raise money. Live theater is an intangible medium that only comes to fruition in the final performance, and the production elements are key to fulfilling that vision. We have assembled a team of committed actors, designers, and production staff to ensure a memorable final product. Additionally, we have partnered with local businesses exchanging our resources and creating a mutual promise of success. The last steps of meeting our budget goals depend on the generosity of those who support live theatre--people like you.
