About this project

*** UPDATE: Although the project has reached it's goal of $1000, please keep it going. $1000 was a minimum goal set and I'm terribly happy to have reached it, but there's much more that can be done with your continued support of donations. Continue on to read below . . . ***

Hi there :)

Most of you know me as Ethan James the photographer or Ethan James Photography the company or James Francis (by birth) or Dr. James Francis (that's 12 years of schooling, but the title is pretty cool). I'm a photographer, a writer, and a professor - my life in thirds.

This year is shaping up to be one of great personal achievement for me in terms of writing and photography. I have been given the opportunity to publish a book on film, see a collection of my work in print as a calendar for 2013, and strive to photograph even more images for a possible photobook printing.

McFarland Publishers has provided me with a book deal to publish a book on film - horror films. As many of you may (or may not) know, I grew up on horror films and the visuals within them have always inspired my work as a photographer from the art house productions of early Italian horror to the gritty, dark, and moody American creations of the 70s and 80s. I teach English with horror films as a support system to my courses, as well. It has always been a childhood dream of mine to write a book about cinema - horror films in particular - and now the goal is within reach; however, putting together a book on film requires copyright fees for securing photos from the movies and that is one area in which I could use your help. The book is tentatively titled Remaking Horror, and it covers American horror from the 1930s to the 21st century. I have previously interviewed Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger), Tom Savini (From Dusk Till Dawn), and others for the project, and there might be a few more surprise interviews to come.

As for photography, Village Lighthouse will be printing a 2013 calendar of my work for distribution this year. It highlights a black & white photography collection I've been working on for quite some time that I like to call "Couch Surfing." These images showcase men at the end of the day after school, work, or play have concluded. Bruno Gmünder (German publishing house) has expressed interest in the series in the past along with images I have photographed on my trips to NY; however, the publisher would like to see more NY images put together in a formal book pitch for print consideration. Again, this is where your assistance could make this possibility a reality. Photography is a great passion of mine, but it can also be a costly endeavor.

2012 is all about publishing, but I cannot do it alone. Double Booked - The Ethan James Publishing Project needs your help. Take a look at the cool rewards you can receive by pledging a donation; no pledge is too small or too big to help these publishing dreams come true. Thank you for taking the time to check out my project and thank you in advance to anyone who finds the projects interesting and worthy enough for a donation.
