A calendar featuring pinups striking back at the objects of their domestic oppression.
For Christmas last year, I received a coffee table book of Gil Elvgren's work. I loved it and must have flipped through it hundreds of times, admiring the fresh-faced, realistically-shaped drawings that stared back at me. Seeing beautiful women with full hips and fleshy arms was like balm after the daily onslaught of images featuring malnourished, androgynous models.
After the initial soothing effects had worn off, however, I was left with the indignant realization that all of Gil's girls seemed to have the collective intellect and competency of a young bush baby. None of the paintings represented what a real woman would do if, say, a lobster grabbed her skirt; if she was stuck in a dead-end “women's work” job; if her life was full of house work and drudgery.
I wondered what his paintings would have looked like had he ever used a real-life, everyday woman as his inspiration. How would she react to a passing truck splashing puddles on her? I highly doubt that all she'd do is pucker up and lift her skirt.
So, with the help of an award-winning photographer, I've taken on the project of putting together a calendar that celebrates both the beautifully classic style of Elvgren's work and the stupendously human reactions that everyone who's ever gotten fed up with endless housework, wearing uncomfortable shoes and the exhausting pressure to fit societal molds can relate to.
I am a trained fashion stylist and I already have a photographer so together we can take care of hair, makeup, costumes, props and photography. I've already lined up twelve local models and all we really need is the money for props, costumes and printing.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look over my project.
