ClockTHREE Jr. is an 9"x9" Open Hardware word clock. Currently we support 4 languages: English, German, Dutch and French. Add yours!
(Frame sold separately)
Welcome to the ClockTHREEjr Kickstarter project and thank you for your interest. Our goal with this project is to build a less expensive, open source, word clock that is highly customizable, looks great and is fun to build.

ClockTHREEjr is an awesome platform for anyone wanting to explore time with electronics. The ClockTHREEjr is a smaller version of our earlier, wildly successful, Kickstarter project ClockTHREE. ClockTHREEjr fits perfectly in a 9" by 9" IKEA RIBBA frame in your choice of colors (not included, sold separately). To make the kit even easier to build, it features mono-color LEDs instead of red, green and blue (RGB) full color LEDs and the LED matrix is smaller at 16 columns and 8 rows, giving a total of 128 addressable LEDs. Other than that, it is similar to the larger, more expensive ClockTHREE.
We need $2500 to make a minimum quantity order of clock kits and we can't get there without your support. So help us to manufacture ClockTHREEjr, an open source Arduino compatible LED array.
The initial application is for a word clock but since each of the 128 (16x8) LEDs are individually addressable and programmable, this device supports several languages (work with us to add yours with the LINGUIST reward!) as well as any number of other applications. Several ClockTHREEJr boards can be connected together to create an even larger LED matrix for applications including a scoreboard style racing clock. We are offering 3 and 5 board versions of our DOOMSDAY clock. Get ready for 12/21/12! ;-)

NEW REWARD!!!
You asked for it? you got it! We designed our DOOMSDAY clock rugged enough to work outside as a mountain bike race timer. The beefed up enclosure cost quite a bit more than the standard ClockTHREEjr enclosure. The we realized that most people don't need a water resistant rugged enclosure for thier multi-board clock. We negotiated a deal with our supplier and are now able to offer 2 and 3-board indoor to-the-minute word clocks at a substantially reduced rate. Behold:

You can of coarse do all sorts of cool stuff with the DOOMSDAY hardware. Here is a remote controlled sample program I wrote recently to demonstrate the capibility:
Our open source design was inspired by Simon Hey's 2007 open source word clock, Doug Jackson's word clock, the awesome single color Peggy 2 LED array sold at the very cool EvilMadScience and the super cool $1200 QlockTWO.
This is a collaboration between four friends on different sides of the world, Anool in Mumbai, India, Justin in Washington, D.C., USA, "Anonymous" in Canada, and David in Sydney, Australia. Justin and Anool previously worked together on the award winning Bar End Brake Light BEBL and also the SharkFin helmet light and of coarse on ClockTHREE.
So far we have already completed the initial design, laid out the board and even fabricated our first versions of the clocks. We want the next version to be more affordable by buying in volume. This is the least expensive fully addressable open hardware word clock available today.
That is where YOU come in! The funding raised through Kickstarter will allow us to create ClockTHREEjr and offer boards, kits and clocks to our backers. All of our partners at WyoLum are volunteers who only do this as a hobby. Proceeds exceeding our costs are re-invested in WyoLum and are used to support Open Hardware in general.
As a promise to our backers, we will update the Kickstarter Backer page on a weekly basis AT A MINIMUM.
We have chosen a one-month beg-athon, so if you think ClockTHREEjr is cool, spread the word and back us if you can.
Thanks again for your interest. We are looking forward to updating you on our progress! In the mean time you can find out more about ClockTHREEjr here WyoLum.com.
Thanks from the WyoLum Team!

Yes, you may provide any font file (*.ttf) for which you have permission to use.
We love google web fonts! There are over 400 font families to choose from. Remember that clocks can either be ALL CAPS or all lowercase depending on the look you want to achieve. http://www.google.com/webfonts#ChoosePlace:select
Another great source is the free font database: http://www.freefontsdb.com/

The clock is designed to fit in perfectly in a 9" by 9" IKEA RIBBA frame in your choice of colors (not included). The buttons used to set the time can be mounted facing upwards (press down from the top) or facing straight out the back - the choice is yours!
Here's a link to the IKEA RIBBA frame : http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00078051/ although, with some hacking, a similar sized shadow box or frame can be used.

The easiest way to get wireless com is to add a bluetooth module. The code already supports it!

Instructions for re-programming your clock can be found at http://wyolum.com/?p=324. We will update the instructions for Arduino IDE 1.0 in a couple of weeks.
To program the clock a 5V FTDI cable is required like this one http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9718. The USB connection is only used to provide power.
-
The clock requries a regulated 5V DC power supply capable of providing ~250mA. This can be a computer USB port or a plug-in wall wart.
Power is applied via one of three optional types if input connectors :
1. (DEFAULT) Mini-USB connector (the kind found on many mobile phones, web cams etc)
http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Catalog%20Drawings/Connectors/UX60-MB-5S8.jpg
2. (Optional) Type B USB connector (the kind found on the back of a printer)
http://media.digikey.com/Photos/On%20Shore%20Technology%20Photos/USB-B1HSW6.JPG
3. (Option) Barrel connector (size 2.5mm ID / 5.5mm OD).
http://media.digikey.com/photos/CUI%20Photos/PJ-002A&B.jpg
A CR2032 3V lithium battery is used to keep track of the time when the clock is unplugged and should last well over 5 years.

To assemble the kit you need a good soldering iron (like this one : http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10707) and solder. If you make any mistakes (happens to me more than I care to admit) you need a solder wick and/or a solder sucker to fix them. A wire cutter is needed for clipping LED and resistor leads once they're soldered. Finally, a small hex key is used to tighten the faceplate screws.
To get an idea of what it will take to build the clock you can read through instructions for ClockTHREEjr v1. https://sites.google.com/site/clockthreeishere/c3jr-build-instructions. Of course, we will update these to reflect the new v2 design shortly.
-
Eventually, maybe. We are able to sell them at this price only because of a quantity discount.
For a single clock the parts alone cost $39 from DigiKey + shipping. See the parts price list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArIyXLWdZyNWdGZZY2ExaGt1R0Y3SmY3NW51UW8xaHc
If and when we do sell the boards, we the unit price will be $25. So you still come out ahead with a kit.
-
In general, no. For international orders, if shipping exceeds $30 for multiple clocks we will either cover it (if it's close) or request you help pay the actual cost. Go ahead, get one for the whole family!
-
Yes! Simply add $11 USD to your reward. We will be sending out a survey after the funding closes to capture you choice of frame (color), language, font and color.
-
Laser cut parts include a painted and laser etched faceplate, backplate and a complete set of baffles. The baffles form a matrix grid around each LED preventing light from spilling to adjacent letters.
