100 Monologues in 24 Hours to raise money for space costs for a big summer project.
Hey Everybody,
I have big plans for this summer. Building upon the success of "Charlie's Funeral" that examined one person's life from multiple points of view, I'm now interested in dealing with place. What does a specific place, and perhaps time, mean to a group of people? I won't reveal what the place is yet, but I can promise that it's going to be the most ambitious project I've ever undertaken.
Well, maybe second most ambitious.
With the rising cost of space in Rhode Island, it's become necessary for me to raise funds so I can produce the summer monologue show. In order to guarantee that each actor in the show can perform at least twice, I usually have to run the show at least four weekends. This year's show may even run longer, and so I'm expecting space costs to be rather high.
Instead of just asking you for money, however, I thought I'd make things a little more interesting.
Whenever I really want to challenge myself, I do what's called a Monologue Madness month, in which I write 100 monologues in just one month. That usually requires me to write four pieces a day for the first week, and three pieces a day, everyday, for the remainder of the month. Doing a Monologue Madness month often helps me stretch myself in terms of what I'm able to produce as a writer.
Now, I want to see if I can condense that experience into a single twenty-four hours.
So, on Wednesday, February 22nd, starting at midnight, I'll attempt to complete 100 monologues (each with a 100 word minimum) in just one day.
Once the monologues have been written ,they'll be assigned to one hundred actors, and for the first three weekends in March, we'll perform "The Twenty-Four Hour Monologues" at the Artists' Exchange in Cranston. All the money we make from that show will go towards the summer monologue project.
Instead of just thinking of this as handing over twenty bucks, think of it as a marathon where you're pledging for each mile. $.10 a monologue means a donation of just ten dollars, $.20 a monologue is twenty dollars, and so on. With each donation comes a reward, including the opportunity to host a monologue party at your home (complete with my grandmother and maybe even a pug or two).
So please donate what you can. Every time I've asked the theater community in this great state for help, they've responded with immense generosity. I hope I can count on you all again.
Thanks,
Kevin
