A comic exploring the world of twins who take on the power of Mama Ganja, finding their place in a world that would see them burn.

The Adventures of the Green Thumb and Purple Haze would ultimately be a serial comic book chronicling the trials and tribulations of the titular characters and their expanding cast of allies and adversaries.

The comic explores themes involving the power of nature and spirituality, the role corporations and governments play in stifling scientific and cultural advancements for the purpose of preserving profits and power, and also what it means to be deemed illegal just by one's lot in life(as it pertains to one's biology, nationality, gender, sexuality, and so on).

Oteil and LeVar have long felt that the war on drugs is unjust, that cannabis laws are ineffective, racist and much more harmful than the plant itself, and that cannabis is a plant and not a drug any more than coffee, tobacco, sugar or alcohol. People shouldn't be made into criminals for utilizing cannabis, and we need to fight for change.

Being a lifelong fan of fantasy and sci- fi, about ten years ago Oteil came up with the idea of twin cannabis superheroes. A few years ago Oteil and LeVar met through Jess, Oteil's then-fiance-now-wife and LeVar's college friend and roommate. Over the last year, they have worked together to bring the twins and their world to life. Through story, image and sound they wish to educate, entertain and inspire people to see all that cannabis has to offer a needlessly struggling world.

The comic would be distributed both as digital media and as printed comics; with potential applications as a motion comic, cartoon, video game or motion picture, but that's all down the road(unless we raise a bazillion dollars right from the start)!

The first issue is already completely illustrated, lettered and ready for the printer/digital distribution. Our primary goal in raising funds is to cover printing costs for this first issue and the creation of all the incentives.

If we should exceed our initial goal in fundraising:

-to the amount of $50,000 there would be the creation of a soundtrack(thematic music, sound effects and voices) to accompany the first issue, distributed to all donors digitally(approximate date August 2012);

-to the amount of $125,000, the remaining 5 issues of the origin story could be illustrated and distributed(digitally) to all donors of $100 or more(approx date November 2012);

-to the amount of $250,000, a motion comic (motion graphics enhanced version) of the first issue could be created and distributed digitally to all donors of $100 or more(approx date September 2012);

-to the amount of $500,000, a soundtrack to accompany the remaining 5 issues of the origin story could be created and distributed to all donors of $100 or more(approx date November 2012);

-to the amount of $1,000,000, a motion comic of the entire 6 issue origin story could be created and distributed digitally to all donors of $100 or more(approx date, 4/20 2013) .

FAQ

  • The budget is figured as follows: 1/3 on the printing of a 10,000 run of Issue #1, on recycled paper and using vegetable-based inks. 1/3 for the creation(materials and time) of the pledge incentives; all the posters, t-shirts, prints, coffee mugs, etc. And 1/3 for shipping costs for the comics and the incentives.

  • Superheroes are an important facet of modern popular culture. In part it is because superheroes are empowered to make change in their world, not only for themselves, but more often then not for perfect strangers. In part its because they are cool! They have super powers, awesome vehicles and amazing adventures! Superheroes traditionally fight for truth, justice and the greater good, and there have been aliens, mythological figures, super-scientists and mutants who have taken up this heroic task.

    The Green Thumb and Purple Haze are superheroes who fight for personal emotional motivations(in retribution for the murder of their family), but also fight for the health and well-being of the planet itself and all her inhabitants. Modern lifestyles often leave us feeling dis-empowered, swallowed up in the deterministic gears of the status quo. Not only this, but the very basics of modern life (food, clothing, housing, medicine and transportation) are actually toxic, not only for the individual, but the wider environment as well.

    These are central themes in The Adventures of the Green Thumb and Purple Haze. How can we live our lives in a way that is in harmony with nature? How can we live lives that are manifestations of our deepest spiritual truths?

  • The Green Thumb and Purple Haze are fraternal twins, so they have the same basic powers, but they will tend to use them a little differently based on their individual natures. Basically they develop cannabis-based metamorphic powers. They can change from a normal flesh and blood human body into a humanoid cannabis flower body. This form is actually living, growing plant matter and they can control this plant body to a very high level. They can grow leaves, take on stem or root like qualities, or concentrate their flowering buds into solid crystalline THC that is effectively invulnerable.

    That's the Green Thumb's favorite aspect, strong and durable, able to smash through walls and let bullets or chemicals bounce off of him. In addition to a hyper-dense form, they are also able to sublimate into a smokey gaseous form, which allows them fly on the air, going anywhere that's not perfectly sealed. That's the Purple Haze's preferred form, which she will learn to wield in many ways.

    They also both have plant telepathy, like their mother, which allows them to communicate with all plants, from algae to trees. There are several other aspects of their powers which will be explored over the course of the series, especially in the spiritual realms.
