About this project

"Melting in Madras" is a funny and reflective solo show about seeking, singing and sickness. In 1995, as a wide-eyed, just-out-of-college 23-year-old, I traveled to South India to explore yoga, meditation, and music for a year. But after three months, my quest for spiritual clarity took a detour when I became seriously ill. Drawing on character work, live music, and storytelling, "Melting in Madras" paints vivid portraits of the people I met and weaves the tale of my pilgrimage with all its confusion, pain, and beauty. The Hindu called my work “a moving and humorous account of an India less traveled.” BackStage called me “an engaging storyteller ... one honest, likable guy telling his story with unaffected simplicity.”

This summer, I'm performing "Melting in Madras" in Boston and New York, and then I'm bringing the show on tour to Minneapolis and to Madison, Wisconsin. My work as an ESL teacher pays the bills but doesn’t allow much extra for taking a show on the road, especially since I'm also trying to save money for tuition this fall when I’ll be starting my master’s in theater education.

So, this is why I'm here on Kickstarter, asking if you'd be willing to help fund my tour. I need to cover festival fees, bus fare, airfare, and publicity and design fees. Those bare-bones expenses add up to $1750. Would you be willing to chip in $17.50 and help me cover 1% of the expenses? I'd be very grateful. Please have a look at the premiums I'm offering as a way to say thank you for your generosity. And the first 15 people who donate $17.50 or more will also get an Overcoat Theater t-shirt!

Any money that I receive in excess of $1750 I will use to cover my lodging and living expenses while I’m on tour. And if you're in Boston, New York, Madison, or the Twin Cities, I hope you can come to the show and see what you're supporting! (Dates below) Please check out my websites for further information and updates.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
