The punkest most damaged comics Jam ever.60 artists/ 90 pages of work . The Missing link between comics great past & future is here!
Suspect Device #1 was released in August 2011, a 35 page book in black and white with one very good idea; making new comics by taking old panels out of context and drawing a new improvised context around them, a new comic from the old. The 2nd issue adds a couple new wrinkles to the game and brings in over 60 artists, including, Noah Van Sciver, Sam Henderson, Chuck Forsman, Johnny Ryan, Kevin Scalzo, KC Green, Brian Ralph, Lizz Hickey, Anne Emond, Brendan Lynch, Box Brown, Heather Benjamin, Noah Lyon of Retard Riot, Pat Ausilio, Keenan Keller, Domitille Collardey and Janelle Hessig.
Suspect Device is set aside from other anthologies by its having a tightly defined identity. As Tucker Stone wrote, "Its the anti anthology!" Each artist's contribution is hammered into a singular mold by the limits imposed on it. As a result, when you read the book you feel as if one long organic story (or panic attack) is taking place. All of the work is hilarious, intense and radiates with a palapable joy. Or as Tucker put it, "Almost everything in here kicks ass. It's funny as hell. Scary. So good."
The book is exciting because nothing like it is being done anywhere. The "device" was invented for my students on the mistaken assumption I was applying the rules of Scot McCloud's improv game, Five Card Nancy. By the time I discovered the truth, it was clear that something special had been developed. I'd taken the technique out of the class room and begun to invite established independent cartoonists. Soon I'd built a stash of pages by some of my favorite cartoonists in the alternative publishing community.
Suspect Device #1 has been selling all over the world, was voted as one of the best ten comics of 2011 on the SparkPlug Comic's blog, and issue 2 is better and more ambitious in every way. It will be around 100 pages, will feature 15 pages of full color work, has a square bound spine and has a neon day-glo cover by Jon Vermilyea. Please make this comic a reality. In return you will receive not only our gratitude, but also rare art and comics.
If you contribute 13 dollars you will receive a copy of the book and a hand drawn pen and ink cartoon by me, editor/ artist Josh Bayer, thanking you for your support( its like simply buying the book in advance.). Each level gains you more valuable and varied prizes. Some of the prizes may shift around, depending on what type of contributions we get. Go ahead and take a look, and thank you again for your interest in self publishing and great comics.
Why are certain words misspelled in your proposal? Seriously, do you think guarantee is spelled "guarauntee?"
Yes I do, I had to resist misspelling "guarantee" again when writing this FAQ, along with the word "mispell", which i have to struggle to spell correctly. I think it looks bad, but I cant correct anything written in the rewards section after i start to get pledges, so i'm stuck.
Oh it's gonna be so good. they're top secret for now though. Probably a lot of covers to keep with the theme of artists-covering-other artists that running through SD2
