Who We Are:
Hello Kickstarter, my name is Dario Antonioni. I’m the founder and creative director of a boutique design studio in LA called Orange22. Over our ten-year history we’ve designed a wide range of award winning products and brand defining retail environments.
Our Project:
We are really excited to bring to the Kickstarter community a new furniture concept we call, Botanist Minimal.
Botanist Minimal
The Botanist Minimal is constructed from sustainably harvested poplar and high-grade engineered veneers. The refined Botanist Minimal has been designed so that no hardware is visible and its composed of two distinct elements, a formed bent wood sleeve and a structural brace. Smartly engineered spring loaded pins within the brace secure the two elements. Each Botanist Minimal comes with a distinctive brushed aluminum signature medallion.

The minimalist profile of Botanist looks great in modern environments.
Precision molds provide a consistent thickness throughout the radius and all hardware is hidden from view.
Botanist Minimal is available in Walnut or Rift Oak.
A brushed aluminum signature medallion authenticates each Botanist Minimal.
The Inspiration:
Botanist Minimal is a reinterpretation of our original all aluminum outdoor bench which was originally conceived for the contract furnishings market. Since its launch the aluminum bench has been specified for use in retail stores, spas, parks and even airports! It’s also won some coveted design awards along the way. Over and over we’ve had many requests to make an all-wood version of Botanist for use in residential interiors.
The Art of Reduction:
The minimalistic design is based on a reduction based design process where we examined a typical bench and rigorously reduced it into its essential elements. In the case of Botanist Minimal only two basic components are meaningful to produce a functional bench. Those components are 1) a bent wood top which transitions into the structural legs and 2) a center rib for additional stability and rigidity. The end result is beautiful with the two basic elements working harmonious together.
How it's Made:
Designing something that’s minimal doesn’t make it easy to manufacture. And the difference between beautiful design and junk is in the detail. This is where being really meticulous pays off. Botanist Minimal has been re-engineered from the ground up to accommodate manufacturing techniques suitable for bent wood production.
How We Will Use the Funds:
We’ve been working on Botanist Minimal for close to one year now. During this time we re-engineered our original design and solicited prototype samples from vendors in China, Indonesia and Vermont. We then got on a plane and traveled to each of these places to review their facilities and the initial prototypes in person. After careful consideration we made our final vendor selection.
Our
decision was based on quality, reliability, attention to detail and
pricing. We are extremely happy with our fabrication partner and
confident that our customers will have a product they will love for
years to come.
We will use the funds from Kickstarter to produce
final production tooling, purchase bulk materials, refine final
packaging and to place our first official order. Its taken a lot of work
to get to this point and now – everything is set to go.

Our first container should arrive stateside by the mid September so it would be safe to say that you could expect your bench the 3rd week of Sept.

No. You will not be charged. If we do not reach our minimum funding goal of $20,000 then your credit card will not be charged.

By the age of 10, while other kids were memorizing baseball statistics, Antonioni was devouring books on the Wright Brothers. Even then, Antonioni was amazed not so much by that first flight itself—but by the fact that two nobody bicycle mechanics had the effrontery to revolutionize a field so far beyond their area of expertise that they almost had no business being there.
"They were innovators who didn't follow a standard path," says Antonioni. "They followed intuition—even if it meant they didn't know where they'd end up, and they were relentless. To me, that's innovation."
Today, the founder of the Los Angeles design lab Orange22 still takes his cue from those aviators, refusing to abide by the often fiercely guarded distinctions between disciplines in design. He calls himself a "maker of things"—a purposefully open-ended description, as Orange22 designs and fabricates both mass-market and limited-edition objects and furniture, brand-defining retail environments, residential interiors and design concepts licensed for mass production. In every case, Antonioni fuses technology, art and design, with the overarching intent to revolutionize the way we live.
Antonioni's work has received awards from RedDot, IDEA, Good Design, Spark, Surface, Contract Magazine and been nominated for the People's Choice Award by the Cooper Hewitt. His work has been exhibited in NY, SF, Chicago, Paris, Cologne, Milan, Sydney, and Singapore. He currently lives and works in Playa Vista, California with his wife, baby girl and two dogs.
