About this project

Mission

  • Provide access to a quality sound system for the SF queer underground at minimal cost.

(.....) Have A Growing Need

YOU:
  • How many times have you been at a mind blowing SF event, only to to miss the world class performance (or be deafened!) due to awful sound?
Artists & Event Organizers:
  • Many underground SF events are labors of love.  Organizers regularly struggle to get them off the ground, and one of the major hurdles in throwing these events is the cost of obtaining a soundsystem. Because quality systems are so expensive to rent, most events end up with donated or cheap systems that are not up to the job.

There Is A Solution

  • QT Soundsystem aims to purchase a solid soundsystem and make it available to the SF queer underground.
  • This system will be stored for free in the mission, and managed by QT Soundsystem.
  • Event organizers & artists interested in using this system can apply for use.  If the project meets the following simple criteria:

~ The event supports the SF queer underground.
~ Able to contribute a maintenance fund fee of $150
and either be trained in setting up the system or
involving a QT Soundsystem approved engineer.
~ Arrange satisfactory transport of the equipment.
~ A qualified tech is able to assist with running the system

  • QT Soundsystem will not be making a profit from this system. This is a community support project. Our intent is to use all fees to cover basic maintenance expenses, and in some cases, the time of the tech person on hand to run the system.

Proposed System // Where the Money Is Going

System Requirements (proposed, components may vary):

  • Crisp sound, with healthy bass... Big tops, wide bottoms.
  • Reasonably power efficient (ie: so it can be run via generator).
  • Transportable.
Funded at $4000:
  • (2) Cerwin-Vega CV2153 Tops
  • (2) Cerwin-Vega JE-36C Bottoms [folded horn designs are smaller and more energy efficent]
  • (1) Amp, power conditioner, limiter
  • (*) Cables, etc
Funded beyond $4000:
  • (1) Sturdy mixer
  • (2) CDJs
  • (*) Playa dust covers

John Major & Jacob Sperber

Has not connected their Facebook account.

After years of magic handiwork creating Frankenstein sound systems out of borrowed and cheaply acquired speakers and hardware components, Jacob Sperber (co-founder of Honey Soundsystem and DJ) and John Major (technical wizard and production coordinator for Comfort & Joy) came together on a cause they truly believe in, professional quality sound.

Both Jacob and Major have been producing underground dance floors for San Francisco’s queer community for the past 3 years (Afterglow, Honey Dusted, LoveEvolution, BigGayWarehouse, Burning Mary’s, Calistoga Retreats, Touch).
