Anyone can animate with Animajig. We've made a tool so simple, yet powerful, that all you need to bring is an idea to share.
Update: We've now got the best $1 reward on Kickstarter!
Animating is fun and you can do it too.
Animajig breaks down the tasks of animation into simple, reusable, drag-and-drop assets that the user can select from our library, or create themselves. If they choose to create an asset, that asset instantly becomes part of the library that’s available to all users. This allows users from every skill level to create and share. Plus, it’s free.
How It Works:
With Animajig, the basis of animation is characters. They are 2D skeletons (stick figures) that have a set of flexible actions and skins associated with them, and animations are built by adding these assets to a timeline; like a director, you just tell the character what to look like and what to do.
The magic happens when the user would like an asset that isn’t currently available—say an action like “wave goodbye” or a skin like “chicken suit.” With our simple and intuitive tools the user can create that asset, and every time a new asset is added to the library it is instantly available to the ENTIRE community.
The fundamental idea behind Animajig is that no one ever has to start from scratch. A user can always start with as much or as little as they’d like from what the community has built before them. We believe animation can be more than just something one person creates and many others consume; it can be something that people respond to, build from, be inspired by, and share.
What makes Animajig special is that being social isn’t something a user can do—it’s something that users are. The more people use Animajig to make animation, the better Animajig becomes for everyone. Community is actually part of the tool itself, which means that users with little of the classic animation skills can still see their ideas come to life, and professionals can save time and watch their creations take on new meaning and context. The possibilities are limitless.
There’s Sound Too:
Like any good animation program, Animajig offers sound support as well. Vocals can be recorded directly into the application. Vocals are run through a process that matches visemes (mouth positions) to the recording, meaning characters will automatically mouth along to your own voice.
Where We Are:
Over the past year, we’ve built a working version of Animajig: We’ve tested the philosophy. We just need to flesh out the libraries and advance the tools.
What we need to do for the release:
- Refine the asset creation tools (they work, but lack refinement)
- Build the user accounts pages and message boards
- Canvas animation to video encoder (not complicated, but a fairly large project that needs to be done)
- Add streaming support for longer animations (we've established how, we just need to implement it)
1–2 months for the version 1.0 release!

Challenges:
Most of the large technical challenges in developing the initial release of Animajig have been solved. The remaining challenges are mostly a matter of working out certain details, such as: refining the UI, finding / fixing remaining bugs, more refining of the UI, and gathering feedback. In addition, there are some features we'd like to enhance, such as character interactions with other characters or objects.
The remaining details require a period of more concentrated and coordinated effort than is possible while we're both working full time. One of the biggest challenges we've faced is being able to find coordinated time to work together on this; it's one thing to be able to email back and forth, or talk on the phone, it's another to be able to sit in the same room and flesh things out.
About The Team:
Joel is a great developer that's already pushed this project to be one of the most ambitious web apps around, and Jason is a top-notch UI designer with over 15 years of experience. We've got the skills and drive to make this project successful, and if funded we'll have the time to make it great.
FAQ
-
No, Animajig runs completely in any HTML5 compatible browser, so no downloads or plug-ins are necessary.
-
Social animation means that animations are made using a library of resources created by, and shared between all users. It's a way of pooling the resources of the community to give people who don't have a strong background in animation a way to build their own ideas, and a way for experienced animators to save time and interact with their audience in whole new ways.
-
Natively the animations are stored as a .js file and a separate audio file. The .js file is essentially just one JSON object that includes all the character images, and actions. The advantage of this is that custom players are quite easy to build, so in theory, Animajig animations could be played back on any platform that supports JSON, which is very common these days. We believe that saving the files as videos will add to their portability online and it's on our 'future feature list', but at the moment it requires more resources than we have as a two-person team.
-
Yes, currently we can import .PNG, .JPG and .GIF. Once we get out of beta, we'll be interested in seeing what formats the community would be interested in adding.
-
Animajig can produce animations at variable resolutions and frame rates including HD quality.
-
No, but we will have a developer API that will let people make plugins and filters for creating and playing back Animajig animation.
-
At present, Animajig is a hosted service. We're still weighing the pros and cons between hosted/distributed environments and will have options either way in the future. Our goal for Animajig, would be to allow the community to share as easily as possible everywhere we can.
