A textbook students can play with: making the abstract concepts of the typical Language Arts classroom accessible- literally!
With these funds, I'm going to be able to make a classroom set of The Tactile English Textbook- that means between 30 and 35 textbooks! One of my classes will get a copy of that textbook for free. That's a pretty big deal for students in low-income neighborhoods. In the 2012-2013 school year, each student in this lucky class will be able to interact with English in a way that's never been done before. The Tactile English Textbook will be a way for students to study and learn things in a hands-on way. It will be based on the Common Core Standards, which are going to be implemented in New Mexico over the next few years.
Each textbook will be hand-made. I need your help to buy supplies to make this labor-intensive project. You can bet I really love using crafting in the classroom, so I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to do this with your help.
As the students use their Textbooks, I'll be monitoring what parts are effective and what improvements I can make for the next set. This data will help me improve the Tactile English Textbook so that each of my students has the opportunity to be successful.
I'm asking for $3300 because I'm budgeting for each book to cost between 85 and 115 dollars to make. This will include paper, binding materials, printing, and art supplies for the students to use with the textbooks. This also includes the cost of creating and mailing the rewards. Remember that my students will get these books for free. I won't financially profit from making these textbooks. They're for the students. Think of it as an investment in the future of our youth.
It's important to keep in mind that tactile learning helps everyone- from the most advanced students to the least capable. It will help students who are learning English, as well as those who plan on majoring in it! This tactile textbook is an excellent way of differentiating material so that all students can be involved in a hands-on way with English.
