Qube is a smart low cost outage and temperature sensor device that can provide immediate local alerts and data all around the world.
Qube alerts people to power outages and temperature related issues through email, Twitter or SMS at any location in the world where it is plugged in. It helps protect homes and equipment, save on expensive medicines and perishables and better plan backup power. Importantly, the Qube intelligently logs power data and is designed such that alerts and power reliability information can be shared with the community. You can now know about historical outage durations as well as patterns at any address, and with intelligent analytics on the server side, it can lead to money saving recommendations for millions of people worldwide.
Qube costs a fraction of any other option and with its temperature sensor works great as a freeze alert.
Personal Outage Alerts
The Qube is a smart sensor device which can be used at residences, vacation homes or businesses and can also share its alerts with the community. The Qube is small, low cost and triggers email, text or tweet alerts; it also logs the time and duration of outages for historical auditing. The Qube just needs to be plugged in at the location you would like to monitor. Local power information can then be easily available. The graph below shows the power availability at a location.
Examples of Qube Use
- Vacation homes where small outages can cause flooding, burst pipes, food spoilage or lost rental income
- Small businesses where random outages at night or on weekends may cause inventory spoilage or sales system to go down
- Office environments where random outages in off hours could impede or delay important tasks
- Sharing Qubes with local communities, friends, or work facilities overseas where power outages affect daily life
- A private business/NGO that wants to log the outage information over a period of time for local power data for civic debate or private investment
- Infrastructure intelligence. To monitor global supply chains and get zip code level power reliability information for businesses or real estate investments
Personal Temperature Logging (Premium Qube for Early Supporters)
For this Kickstarter campaign and early supporters we are offering a Premium Qube. The Premium Qube comes with a temperature sensor and logs temperature to the website. In addition to power outages, this Qube will help you monitor the temperature in your home or business from the web and get high or low alarms. Most web enabled temp sensors are more expensive.
Qube Features and Settings
The Qube will notify you of the following:
1. The power or internet goes out.
2. The temperature reaches a certain degree.
3. The temperature passes a certain degree for a user defined amount of time.
4. Outage and temperature data is logged and viewable online.
No Maintenance Needed; Qube is Plug in and Forget it
The Qube comes in a well designed, rugged enclosure. The Qube requires no maintenance, and has no batteries or other parts to replace. It will serve you and the community around you for years.
Installation is Easy
Installing a Qube is an easy three step process and only takes a couple minutes.
1. Plug in the power cable.
2. Plug in the ethernet cable.
3. Type your Qube's number and location at outagedaily.com. You can also assign a Twitter Handle for your Qube to allow the device to tweet and manage the frequency of those tweets.
What Happens If The Internet Is Out?
This version of the Qube is designed to work off the internet connection at the location. It works by sending a small heartbeat pulse. It will trigger an alert if there is a long internet outage but the power is still available. The Qube firmware will still record and backfill all the power data reliably in such cases. The positives of this approach are that cost can be kept very low due to non-requirement for a phone or cellular line and 100% of all outages are caught. This design choice was made after detailed discussions with users and their requirements for our base model. To provide more detail to users, data from other Qubes in the close vicinity is also used when providing an alert. If there is tremendous support we may add phone or cellular terminal based communication to the Qubes.
Global Power Of A Few Qubes
While the Qube benefits its owner, it also contributes to a larger good. Just a thousand well distributed Qubes can help map and track data for the majority of the world. The data from the Qubes will help countless people better plan their day, resources and activities and more effectively deal with outages. Such local data (at zipcode and lower levels) when publicly available the same way weather data is available today, will create tremendous opportunity to protect and improve all infrastructure.
OutageDaily.com is the web platform that pulls all the data together, and is also accessible by all across the world (through mobile and web) to receive alerts. OutageDaily acts as a cloud based router for outage information and is geo-coded to utility boundaries.
Useful for Utilities and Other Agencies
Utilities can use the web platform to review information about their service areas, and to issue targeted public service and other safety information for load shedding. In many areas of the world, undercapitalized utilities have yet to invest in latest customer service technologies. OutageDaily gives them an easy to use mobile enabled platform.
Qube is a key part of of our hope to provide a 24x7 power status platform to millions of people worldwide. When Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast of the US, a comprehensive picture on outages etc. was impossible to get. The below map shows actual data collected by the outagedaily pilot platform and shows the breadth of Sandy related outages.
Outagedaily will be the first source for outage data that is independent of utilities and country borders.
Why Our Project Matters
A small step by us as a community can help millions of people worldwide and help us get accountability for power infrastructure. Your support will allow us to get the Qube to production and allow us to distribute it in countries with poor infrastructure. 4 key things that this project will allow people to do that they have not been able to do:
1. Subscribe to multiple locations and get customized alerts on their mobile phones for these locations.
2. Get a comprehensive picture about the extent of an outage in real time.
3. Benchmark one location versus another for quality and consistency of power.
4. Use the historical data, to identify patterns in power congestion, and drive more planned change.
Just in US, with an average of about 4 outages per year, the outages are estimated to cost over $80 Billion(as per DOE) per year. Over half a million Americans experience an outage lasting more than an hour every day. In developing countries where outage incidents number in the hundreds a year, the losses are staggering and a massive drain on the economy and environment. Alerts and data can drive significant changes in planning, accountability and may eventually help us get to predictive intelligence.
Detailed Story Behind the Qube!
Qube was born because the same way traffic congestion data has helped people around the world, personalized power status information in real time can help people prevent losses and plan better globally. A coincidence of events last year, including the July 2012 outage that left 620 million people without power in India, inspired us to create an outage device that was low cost, socially shareable and could provide local power reliability data for any location in the world.
We then showed people some of the early prototypes, tested the Qubes and collected market data. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The benefits were apparent when you are away from your residence, vacation home, or have something important running.
When Sandy superstorm happened in October, many friends immediately saw the benefit of this device since they were calling their building supers or management company every few hours to check about power availability.
Evolution of the Qube
Qube is a much more affordable alternative to other power alarms that use batteries, dial out a limited set of numbers and do not log any of the power data.
Manufacturing Plan - Designed and Being Made in New York
The Qube's design has been completed (including firmware, enclosure and web APIs) and multiple test units have been created and heavily tested. Test Qubes have been plugged in at multiple locations and have been regularly sending data. In preparation for volume production, we spoke to and visited multiple manufacturing facilities over the past few months and after much diligence, have chosen a partner in upstate New York. We are keeping all manufacturing in the US to ensure timely delivery of the Qubes.
The Qube's circuit boards will be manufactured with our partner in upstate New York. They already have all the machining and tooling necessary to produce enough boards to meet the demands of a successfully funded project. Kickstarter funds will only be used to order circuit board components for manufacturing.
The Qube's enclosure will be molded by the same manufacturing partners in upstate New York. Just like the circuit boards, our partner also has all the necessary tooling to mold enough enclosures to cover all the boards. Kickstarter funds will go directly towards the order for these enclosures.
The accessories that come with the Qube such as the Ethernet cable and micro-USB power supply will be ordered in bulk from a supplier who we've identified to have a short delivery time. Therefore, we believe we've minimized the chances for delays in regards to the promised delivery schedule.
We've already underwent a small trial production run of the final Qubes to fully understand our partners production capacity, identify potential bottlenecks, analyze any logistical concerns, and most importantly ensure quality in the final product.
The key steps in transition to the production are as follows:
1. PCB manufacture and assembly to be done in upstate New York.
2. Chassis to be molded.
3. Final assembly and packaging to be finished in New York City.
We have tested over 20 Qubes. Our manufacturing partner based in upstate New York have delivered excellent results. They have many established products in the market and one of the most successful Kickstarter projects.
The completed boards and the chassis will be mated and tested fully at our office in New York City and shipped from here. The Qube ships with a power adapter for your country and an ethernet cable.
How Can Kickstarter Help Us
We will use funds from this Kickstarter project for the initial production run of the Qube. We have priced the Qube very attractively on Kickstarter compared to the expected retail price. The funds will be used to buy the components for the Qube and to get enclosures and PCBs manufactured.
Your support will help move the entire project forward. It will help more people to know about this project and use it. Through continued development we will be able to add more predictive and statistical tools to the data being collected.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are risks inherent with any new product. We may experience some manufacturing issues or some other logistical issue. We have carefully thought through the possibilities, and think that with our experience, planning and all the work done over the last year those risks are significantly mitigated:
Team: The team building the outagedaily.com and the Qube has extensive experience in technology, electronics and the energy space. The founders, Vinay and Reena, have extensive technology and market development experience. Vinay has previously done a lot of work with power backup inverters, lighting controls and other electronics. Reena has managed technology and market development with global teams. Other key team members include Ozgur who founded one of the fastest growing technology firms in Europe and Victor Yee, a multi-talented engineer who worked on the space shuttle's fuel tank design. Our board manufacturing partners are leaders in the space of open source internet connected devices and have had one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever.
Location: All manufacturing and testing is being done in the US for this project. This will ensure that the quality is top-notch, schedule delays are negligible and any issues that emerge can be addressed immediately.
Extensive testing: The team has been testing actual production boards in the field for over 6 months. All of them have performed very well under various conditions. We have actual devices running on both 110V and overseas on 220V with no downtime. At this point given the months of performance and testing the reliability is reasonably well established.
Established Engineering Practices: The Qube uses proven technologies, standards and off the shelf components which have been used in millions of devices. As such no surprises are expected in the constituent parts.
