MMA WARS is the most fun way to train for and fight your friends, gamers, and Pros, without ending up in the emergency room!
WHAT IS MMA WARS?
In 2010 while editing the movie I produced, Warrior (which I am proud to say was nominated for an Academy Award this year, for Nick Nolte’s performance), I was playing the social game Mafia Wars on Facebook and I thought “why not create a cool social game of my own, based in the world of Mixed Martial Arts?” I had been steeped in MMA for the last couple of years because of the film, got to know a lot of the fighters, built relationships with everyone from Punk and Skrape from Tapout, to top trainer Greg Jackson, to Olympic and Pro wrestler Kurt Angle (all involved in Warrior as cast and/or advisors). With their help and support I could create a game that would have integrity, would bring in real-world fighters and brands, and (most importantly) would be a cool, fun game to play. With contacts we had at Maxim magazine, I could get them to include the Maxim girls as Ring Girls in the game, with players choosing their favorites to “bring” to their fights. Players could also build their perfect fighter, fight both friends and real pros, get trained, build their own gyms, hurl taunts at other players... it would be a blast!
I decided to call the game MMA Wars.
WARRIOR inspired MMA WARS
STUDIO (DIS) APPROVAL
Warrior, the movie I was making, was for the studio Lionsgate, so the first thing I did was to meet with the studio about collaborating on MMA Wars. The studio’s head of digital loved the idea and we thought we had a deal to co-develop the game.
The Problem with Studios
There was one catch I soon found out - if the studio was to be involved (and invest) they would need to own the game. I understood that with my movie - they put up millions of dollars to fund and distribute it. But hold on – in the case of the game, it was outside of the film, with a different name, and we were going to be distributing it ourselves, so that didn’t seem fair. That’s the problem with studios - they want own everything.
The Decision to Go Alone
We weren’t going to let the studio own the game. We told the studio we were going to do the game on our own.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME
I immediately got the help and interest from my friends who wanted to be part of the game.A bunch of pro fighters were excited to be a part of it, Kurt Angle would lend his support, the big MMA site Sherdog wanted to participate, and so on.
My partner Scott Bobrow and I spent hours burning the midnight oil working out a game design and features we loved.
The Hard Way
We spent over a year developing the game with a small game development company we were introduced to. We learned a lot about creating a social game. I know a lot about how to make a great movie, but games were new to me. I wanted a game that was groundbreaking, and integrated the fighters (as well as the brands and sponsors endemic to the sport) into the game in a really cool, fun way. I wanted high level graphics and fight mechanics. I spent a lot of my own money to create the game and I learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. After a year of not getting what fully we wanted, and having deadlines consistently missed, we finally had to fire that company.
We learned the hard way.
The Good News
We ultimately found the group we wanted to help bring MMA Wars to market. And they are highly responsive.
The good news is much of the work we had done is usable and now technology in social games has advanced enough that we can make the graphics, animation and gameplay much better than when I first started.
Players choose the Ring Girls they want for their fights
WHY WE NEED THE KICKSTARTER COMMUNITY
We have the game 75% complete but it’s the last 25% that really matters. We are adding better graphics and some really cool new features. The game will be everything we wanted and more.
We are asking the Kickstarter community for $25,000 to support getting the game finished and launched.
Once the game is finished, we have a marketing strategy that will utilize promotional partnerships and social media to build an audience cost-efficiently. We also hope the Kickstarter community will love what we’ve done so much you will spread the word and help build a viral success. Of course for all of this to work we need a great game. We have everything in place to make this happen.
WHAT ABOUT MOBILE? HELP US BUILD OUR MOBILE VERSION FOR ANOTHER $100,000.
We think MMA Wars would also be an incredible mobile game. It will allow us to take the graphics, animation and game mechanics to a higher level. With Kickstarter’s support we will simultaneously begin developing the mobile version of the game. We are confident we can have the mobile game built for $100,000, for what would typically cost over $200,000.
ABOUT OUR REWARDS
We want to give our supporters rewards that will be special and unique. And with each sponsorship level we are giving virtual currency so you can play the game and share with friends and family.
Not to be shamelessly self-promotional but for any of you who haven’t seen (or don’t know) my movie Warrior- here is a link to our website: http://www.warriorfilm.com/index2.html
