Hey all, Postcards are all officially mailed (although I have no clue how long they will take to travel). I've also finally begun blogging so keep tabs on my wordpress site. Next week I will blog the day roundup for Machu Picchu! Abrazos desde Santiago, Heather

Hello all, Internet access in Peru was spotty but the country is amazing. Now that I'm starting to get settled in Chile, I will be blogging soon and regularly. In the meantime, postcards are nearly ready to head your way! Even if you know I have your address, please send it to my gmail (birdmaddgirl) with the subject line Postcard Address. It will be helpful for me to be able to search quickly. Love and gratitude from afar, heather

Hi all,

So grateful to be climbing up past my original goal - immense thanks to all my awesome backers! I can't wait to send you postcards and so much more.

In the interest of disclosure and transparency, I want to keep you all updated on costs associated with my research trip. My initial goal covers just a small part of these so here's a little more info:

Final cost:

  • Plane fare (Boston, Cusco, Santiago): $1829
  • 1 Day trip to Machu Picchu: $335

Estimated costs:

  • Hostels in Perú: $180
  • Transportation expenses in Perú: $200
  • Hostels in Chile: $200
  • Transportation expenses in Chile: $300
  • Entrance fees & site visit costs in Chile: $100

I'm extremely excited that the support thus far will cover a significant portion of the outlays I've already made. More help, as you can see, will not go unappreciated! I am incredibly fortunate to have so many backers who believe in this project and who are willing to help me do the footwork to make it a reality.

More updates to come - takeoff is less than 30 days away!!!

Update #1 · Apr 17, 2012 · comment

I am so delighted and thrilled with the outpouring of support for my book project! My thanks are really not enough.

Since we've come close to my initial goal, I'm hoping to see it surpassed. It would be amazing to add further destinations (like Parral, the birthplace of Neruda) to the itinerary and to have additional support for extended research in Cuzco and Santiago. Let's push for $2500, which would add significantly to the sites I would be able to visit and provide better resources for the itinerary already planned. With 26 days remaining this seems attainable in a way I wouldn't have previously dreamed.

Massive love to my backers - I can't wait to head south and to provide you all with updates and snapshots of my progress.
