I put comic book panels on cookies. Like comics and/or cookies? Help me expand my business with chocolate!
9/6/12 UPDATE: Wow, thank you so much to everyone who helped get us to our goal! This is truly incredible. We've still got some time, though, so let's make the most of it! If we can get this Kickstarter project anywhere between $8,000-$10,000, it will go a long way toward helping me sell cakes locally! It would be truly amazing to be able to market and sell geeky decorated cakes in the Research Triangle area.
What is a Comic Book Panel Cookie?
You know how some bakeries can put photos on cakes? I use the same technology to put completely edible icing photos from comic books onto cookies. No comics are harmed in the process.
I have a printer that prints with edible ink onto icing sheets, which I can then transfer onto the cookie using royal icing as a base. It's really delicious, and stays fresh for weeks in the sealed package. The most common response I get is "It looks too good to eat!"
Goals of this Kickstarter project:
My goal is to expand my business, starting with putting chocolate on cookies instead of royal icing. The $4,800 is the minimum I'll need to get extra equipment, start working with chocolate, design and obtain better packaging materials, and help fund extra marketing and promotion. Any amount I may get over that minimum will help me even more.
About Golden Age Bakery:
I started Golden Age Bakery over a year ago, baking out of my kitchen. My home kitchen has been inspected and certified as safe for processing commercial baked goods.
I use local butter, local, organic flour, and organic eggs and sugar. I make sure that everything is as high quality as I can possibly make it.
I use comic book panels from the Golden Age era of comics (late 1930s to early 1950s). I make sure to only use images that are in the public domain, or that I have the rights to use.
I can put any image file on a cookie, but either I or the person requesting it needs to have the rights to that image.
The minimum amount, $4,800, is what I would need to improve my at-home kitchen to streamline larger quantities and start working with chocolate.
If I make more than the minimum it would allow me to get another oven, a 'business' refrigerator for dough, and another icing printer. (Currently I'm just using the one, and I live in fear of it breaking)
My ultimate goal with this bakery is to open up a small location in Chapel Hill. I'd hire another baker to work on breads, and I'd focus on cookies and cakes. Right now Golden Age Bakery is a side business, while the majority of my income comes from working at a 9 to 5 job. My office job is great, and I'm certainly happy to have it, but my dream is to work as a baker full time in my own incredibly geeky bakery.
About the video:
My good friend Ted, whom I met at my old comedy theater, agreed to produce the video for this Kickstarter project. Two other friends (Aaron and Kit) from the theater agreed to do the voices with me. Here's a short clip of the guys when we got together to do the voice acting:
A little about me:
I'm a self-taught baker with a love of comic books and pretty much all things geeky. I have a black belt in Ninjutsu (from the Chapel Hill Quest Center), and I used to perform at DSI comedy theater. (I stopped performing to focus more on my business.) I am deeply in love with Batman, and also my fiancee, I guess.
In the video you may have noticed the gorgeous quilt behind me while I spoke to the camera. That was made by my late grandmother, Dorothy Davis, who was a huge inspiration to me in starting this business. She was a woman of many extraordinary talents who spent every day of her life making items of beauty. She was passionate in everything she did, and didn't waste a moment of her life.
And now, a picture of a cake I made for a Star Wars marathon:
The architect of this Death Star overlooked a pretty major security flaw... it's delicious!
Please feel free to ask me questions! I'm honestly quite friendly. :) Thanks for reading this far, and if you decide to donate, thanks for that too! I hope you're as excited by these delicious cookies as I am!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
