"Hello, Skater Girl" is a photo book that captures the spirit, determination and playfulness of girls skateboarding over a year in 2011. It mixes image, illustration and text to document the lives of several skaters doing what they love to do: skate — at competitions, alone and together at parks, backyard pools and favorite skate spots.
What are you doing, anyway?
My goal is to conclude a year of documenting girls skateboarding with an image and text photography book. Ultimately, I hope the becomes something that documents a moment in skateboarding's cultural history and can inspire and encourage the sport and the women who eagerly participate in it.
I've been working on this project since November of 2010 and plan on finishing by the end of 2011. I've already made two "prototype" books as a way to experiment with design, layout and to communicate my intent for the project and to test the way that the photography works within the context of a book.
Girls skateboarding..but you're a boy..how'd you end up doing this?
I started shooting skateboarding as a way to get to know my new town of Venice Beach California. So much of the town's history, culture and spirit is tied to board sports like surfing and skateboarding. As a sometimes photographer, the camera became an comfortable way for me to get to know the people and the place where I now live. And it had to be skateboarding because I don't want to get my camera wet.
What you see in the video is representative of the work done for the first half of this year. I'm going to continue shooting through the rest of the year, both near home base in Los Angeles and anywhere in the world I can get to where girls are skating.
What're you going to do with the loot?
I plan to use the money from this Kickstarter to cover the costs of designing, prototyping and printing a limited edition photo book. Additionally, I plan to hire an illustrator and book designer to contribute to the book design. The biggest cost is printing, especially for a limited run. This isn't a money-making venture by any means. I'm not looking to buy gear or cover travel costs or anything like that. I just want a book printed that people can enjoy.

I am a designer, technology guy, artist and photographer. I've been working on this project for a year. Most of my work combines an interest in making things, technology and its implications for cultures, people and their peculiar practices.
I've shared my work and exhibited projects at places such as SIGGRAPH, SK Telecom's Art Center Nabi (South Korea), Ars Electronica, Banff New Media Institute, Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), International Society of Electronic Arts Festival, American Museum of the Moving Image, Art Interactive (Boston), Bitforms Gallery (NYC), Boston Cyberarts Festival, Rhizome Eyebeam Atelier (NYC) and the Times Square Panavision/Jumbotron.
I work in an advanced design studio and run the Near Future Laboratory, both in Los Angeles.
This is my first photography book.
