Klezmer musician and composer Benjy Fox-Rosen creates a ground-breaking song cycle of new Yiddish music.
I am Benjy Fox-Rosen, a composer and performer of Yiddish and klezmer music. I teach and perform this music all over the world in the company of outstanding musicians.
This June, I am planning to record a new album of original Yiddish songs composed around the poetry of Mordechai Gebirtig (1877-1942), one of the foremost Yiddish poets of the 20th century. His poems reflect the complexity of Jewish life in Krakow in the first half of the 20th century: they alternate between bitterness and hopefulness, hatred and forgiveness. The melodies for these poems, if they once existed, are lost. Over the last year I have set Gebirtig’s poignant words to new music, shaping them into a song cycle, which was premiered at the International Klezmer Festival in Fürth, Germany in March 2012. The performance was a powerful experience for the musicians and audience alike - never before had I felt my connection to the texts transmitted so intimately to the audience.
I want the recording of this music to have the same effect. To ensure this, I will be joined by exceptional musicians who artfully maneuver between the intersections of folk and improvised music: Patrick Farrell (accordion), Avi Fox-Rosen (guitar), Tyshawn Sorey (percussion) and Michael Winograd (clarinet). We will be working in the Bunker recording studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Daniel Blacksberg will be producing the album.
But all of this requires money! To ensure that this music is recorded at the highest possible level, I need your help. I am trying to raise $5000 minimum for this project. Ideally, I would like to raise $9000 so that I can design, print, master and promote the album, but $5000 is the absolute minimum to get the music recorded and mixed. With Kickstarter I only receive the money if I reach my goal of $5000.
Please, join us in creating a compelling and dynamic piece of 21st century new Yiddish music built on the foundation of Gebirtig’s masterful lyrics. Every little bit helps.
Thank you for your support!
