I won an International prize with 7 presentations of my play in 7 countries in the next year - but no funding to get there - help!
About a year ago, I finished an odd little play called "The Hummingbirds."
It's about two unemployment counselors in a possible future world, where unemployment counselors assign people jobs. Not that the jobs are what the applicants want to do, nor are they necessarily safe for anyone to do. The play delves into our current frustration with unemployment, domestic terrorism, strippers and weaponized hummingbirds.
Further, the play can be performed by any two actors of any age race or gender. So far I've seen a few combinations, but there are many more to explore and with each combination, different subtexts get explored.
To my delight, people seem to really be responding to it. It won the Global Age Project in February at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley and was a semi-finalist for the O'Neill Summer Playwrights Conference in Connecticut.
And then, the play won a huge playwrighting contest called the Internationalists Global Playwrighting Contest. I am beyond thrilled! Here's the link for info on the contest: http://theinternationalists.org/playwright.html
The play will have at least 7 presentations in 7 countries over the course of the next 12 months (and maybe a few more). The readings will be in Berlin, Bucharest, The Hague, Mexico City, New York City, Zurich and Zaragoza. Zaragoza, Spain is first on June 22nd, and I am on my way there, without the funding to go.
The Challenge: the Internationalists is a loose collective of directors, and not financially equipped to fund any travel for the playwright to see all these cool presentations, so it's up to me to raise the funds to get there.
And, not surprisingly, flying around the world is really expensive - the first leg of the trip to Zaragoza (including airfare, trains, hotel and food) has been budgeted at $1600, and there was no time to raise funds for it. I am happy to pay what I can and I am applying for grants, including emergency travel grants and others, but they most likely will not cover all or a fraction of the costs.
So in order to experience how different languages and cultures react to "The Hummingbirds," I am asking you to donate money, however small, to help pay for everything from food to hotels to trains and more. Even at the smallest level, any help would be appreciated. And you'll receive some cool rewards, from signed programs to cooked meals.
I also will also gladly accept airline miles on American, Delta and United (as those airlines and their partners all seem to go to the places I need to go). 75,000 airline miles will usually completely cover a flight, even to the most exotic locals. So to be clear - the gift of $1.00 is plus 25,000 miles, not give a dollar and get 25,000 miles.
And ANY donation will greatly appreciated!
If you are unable to donate, I completely understand. I am grateful to have so many supportive family and friends.
If you can donate, I'd like to thank you in advance for your consideration and assistance in helping me build little Hummingbird nests all over the world!
