An adventure novel written as a very musical, narrative poem, The House Pet may be unlike anything you've read in the last 400 years.
TALES FROM GEDEONORE
BOOK ONE: The House Pet
The Flannery family was the happiest group of Irish souls you'd ever want to meet.
This week, the situation has changed entirely. Grandad went missing. Mother and Father have gone crazy. And the kids just want it to all be like it used to be.
Aubrey (14), Finn (12) and Rilky (8) are the siblings caught in the center of the meltdown while trying desperately to get along with each other amidst the turmoil. Quite literally, a world away, in the idyllic land of Gedeonore, is the spurned teenage girl at the center of their upheaval. If their lives are ever to return to normal -- and if Gedeonore is going to continue to exist at all -- they must do something about the grey that has taken a hold of her, turning her into something she was never meant to be.
The House Pet is a 13,000 word narrative adventure poem for Young Readers, Young Adults and adults who can still appreciate good literature! It is a novel of wonderfully conversational and musical rhyming verse that has the power to inspire young people to enjoy, value and appreciate poetry in a way they are not currently being taught to do.
((If John Keats and Shakespeare teamed up to write an Irish Fairytale chapter book, this is what it would be like!))
The back of the book will have a full glossary for easy access to vocabulary definitions as well as a 12-15,000 word companion piece with short stories of life in Gedeonore.
If you love classic poetry, or simply words and language, and want your kids to share the same love, please support this project!
(The ultimate goal for this project is to become self-financed. When the book is complete and delivered, I will work to market it through a variety of channels in hopes that it will make enough to finance the next book in the series: Day of the Doves.)
The look of the book, like the book content, is meant to be quite unique. The amount of funding received will determine to what degree this can be taken. Any amount up to 15% over our funding goal will go into the hardcover books. As-is, the book will be hardcover, with a full-color jacket. The interior will contain celtic-inspired designs in full color on many pages as well as full-color illustrations at least once per chapter. The goal for the physical book itself is for it to exist on its own as an art piece. I want it to be the kind of thing that a young person thinks is the coolest book they've ever seen so that they *want* to pick it up, carry around and show to others.
The interior illustrations will be aptly handled by Mark McMonagle, a multi-talented musician, writer, artist and ordained Orthodox Priest from Upstate New York! Mark blew me away with his illustration abilities. He is very familiar with the gothic/celtic look we're going for in the book and is an incredible addition to the team.
Update! Mark has added some book-centered samples.
Here are a couple more pen drawing samples from Mark:
The book layout is being done by David G. Danglis of Pinwheel Creative, a self-owned graphic design company in Lima, NY. Dave is an incredible graphic artist and a dear friend for over 20 years. His 25+ years of expertise in all things design-y, book layout, font mastery, unbound creativity and overall critical discernment make him a no-brainer as the go-to guy for putting together the final book.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON'T RAISE OUR GOAL?
If we do not not reach our goal by the deadline, we do not get any funding. You will not be charged and no rewards will be sent out. Please support us and prevent this from happening! And if you decide you'd like to add more to your donation, click the blue "manage your donation" button and enter the new amount by choosing a new incentive.
The rewards are being handled by two administratively-minded friends of mine who will do a MUCH better job of keeping in touch, keeping track and ensuring a timely and accurate delivery. I am the creative guy. I am awful at the other stuff. So, thank you David Strait and Joyce LeFevre. I don't know what I would do about this if you hadn't volunteered.
