About this project
Wayward Sisters is four far-flung friends making music together. Beth Wenstrom (baroque violin), Anne Timberlake (recorders), Anna Steinhoff (baroque cello) attended Oberlin Conservatory, where they did a lot of pizza-eating and chatting and zero playing. Finally, in 2009, they realized their mistake.Together with John Lenti (theorbo and guitar), Wayward Sisters has excited and inspired audiences across the United States, including appearing as Emerging Artists on the Newberry Consort's 2010-2011 concert season. Critics have praised Wayward Sisters' "imaginative program and alert, stylish performances," as well as the group's "polished and spirited playing and well-balanced ensemble" (Chicago Classical Review).
In September 2011, Wayward Sisters won the Early Music America/Naxos recording competition. This was AWESOME and means that Wayward Sisters has the opportunity to record our debut CD with the Naxos recording label -if we can get ourselves to rehearsal and recording locations across North America.
Naxos will pay for the production and distribution. Wayward Sisters will need to come up with the funds for airline tickets to the the recording site, plus lodging, food, living expenses, etc. during the process. And the airfare is killer: we live in Seattle, Richmond, NYC, and Chicago, so getting together isn't cheap. Not only that, but we have to rehearse a full CD's worth of new & gorgeous music, which means, unfortunately, more airline tickets prior to the month in which we record. (Wayward Sisters will receive no income from the sale of our CD.)
In short, this is an amazing opportunity, but we need your help to take advantage of it. By August of 2012, we hope to record the mercurial and lovely music of Matthew Locke. It's wayward music for a wayward band. Let us know if you can help us along the road.

Anne Timberlake (recorders) lives in Richmond, VA, where she upholds a proud tradition of indecision by working in as many different fields as possible. She'd be remiss if she didn't introduce her compatriots. The playing of Beth Wenstrom (baroque violin) has been described by the New Yorker as "elegant and sensual, stylishly wild." Beth also knits baby blankets. Anna Steinhoff (baroque cello) hails from Chicago, IL, where she plays baroque and modern cellos, viol, and croquet. John Lenti (theorbo) lives in Seattle, WA and has been praised for his "uncommonly big sound" (Third Coast digest). He makes a lot of noise in general.
