About this project
Ray of Light Theatre does not put on your momma's musical. Known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as the heralds of the West Coast Premiere of Jerry Springer the Opera, and the critically acclaimed Rocky Horror Picture Show - we have fresh, evocative and original takes on every production we mount. Our re-imagined production of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins will be no different; a multi-media rich piece, with the rare Michael Starobin musical orchestrations for the original 1992 London cast at Donmar Warehouse.
Bold, surreal, thought-provoking and disturbingly funny, Assassins is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written. We kick off our 10 year anniversary season with a dream turned nightmare where assassins and would-be assassins meet, and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream. We're seeking visionary, creative and altruistic individuals to help us put on our most musically intricate show yet.
$15,000 in this blossoming economy would literally breathe life into this production, giving us the raw materials to create our devastatingly gorgeous set designed by award winning set creator, Maya Linke. It would give us a base from which to support an 8 musician acoustic band and 16 local actors. Most of all, it would give each of you, in some way great or small, a way to interact and donate to a community company that contributes the best of what San Francisco theater has to offer.
With your generous help we'll be able fund build space for set, props, costumes and marketing. And we can move forward with our budget plans for next season. We have already procured partial funding for the rights to produce the show and theater rental deposit in June of 2011. We are receiving generous backing for sound and all of our production staff is volunteer. And remember, Ray of Light is a 503(c) non-profit organization with full tax-deductible benefits for you and/or your group.
The Venue The beautifully restored Eureka Theater, originally built in 1966, is part of The Gateway, located just two blocks from the Embarcadero. Originally constructed as a small art house cinema, it was converted to a proscenium theatre in 1998. The Eureka seats 200 and is fully wheelchair accessible.
A lot will happen in the next few weeks as we go full speed ahead into rehearsals, we'll share our progress with you every step of the way. Follow along on Facebook, on our website at roltheatre.com or feel free to keep up with us on Kickstarter!
We love putting on shows and we know you feel the same enthusiasm when you see our productions. Thanks to everyone who's ever supported Ray of Light over the last 10 years; we're looking forward to serving the Bay Area Theater Community for another 10 the same way we did the first, with passion, dedication and fun.
Whether you're a footlight or a full follow-spot, we're looking forward to meeting all of our Rays of Light.
Best, Shane Ray, Justin Sadoian, Alexis Wong & The Team of Assassins
