"Chalo!" Hindi for "Let's Go" follows two student fashion designers as they embark on a journey to live and work in an Indian garment factory.
Fashion is an increasingly complex industry with far reaching social and environmental impacts which are largely unseen by the consumer. There is an unprecedented need for innovative design solutions to bring about change. Young fashion designers are asking: How?
Two student designers will address this question by going to the source of where fashion begins and participating in every step of the production process–from fiber to finished garment.
Shot in HD over a period of five weeks (July 1 – August 07, 2011) the designers will live and work at Pratibha Syntex, one of India’s largest socially and environmentally responsible garment factories. The challenge is to design a commercial line of clothing from post-industrial textile waste and gain an intimate understanding of early supply chain values. They will meet with organic cotton farmers; work alongside factory employees in the knitting, spinning, dyeing and garmenting departments; and collaborate with a women’s empowerment NGO, Jhoole in order to bring their designs to life.
The purpose of Chalo! is to question what it takes to implement genuine change in a vast industry.
