This live theatre adaptation of slave narratives from North Carolina takes audiences through a slave cabin and barn at Stagville.
Bare Theatre aims to increase awareness of Historic Stagville and the Slave Narrative Project by staging an environmental theatrical piece called LET THEM BE HEARD.
Historic Stagville was one of the largest plantations in the South at the time of the Civil War. The land stretched across most of northern Durham County, and over 900 slaves lived and worked there.
Today, the original owner's house (which dates back to the 1700's), family cemetery plot, slave quarters, and a hand-built barn still stand.
Despite the cultural and historical importance of Stagville, awareness in the community remains low. With state budget cuts looming, resources like Stagville are threatened. Without support and funding, this historic site could be lost.
The text for this play comes entirely from the Slave Narrative Project, a collection of interviews with former slaves from North Carolina in the 1930's.
An African-American cast will bring to life stories of men and women who grew up as slaves in their own words. Their stories are touching, sad, defiant, even angry, and yet some of them have touches of humor.
The performance is a short walking tour of Horton Grove at Stagville. This lantern-lit tour takes place in two structures hand-built by enslaved workers. The tour begins in a slave quarters cabin and moves to the Great Barn.
LET THEM BE HEARD will help draw new audience and support for Stagville. Tickets sold go entirely to Historic Stagville in support of their mission to preserve local history and educate students and adults.
Bare Theatre is a non-profit organization that is raising Kickstarter funds to cover production costs - actor costs, gas, period costumes, printing, publicity - for this original dramatic work.
