This is a book of letters. Letters to our body parts.
Attention: People With Body Parts commenced in the summer of 2012 when more than 50 people were asked to speak to their finger nails, their skin, their cancer, and any other part that makes us move. This book of love letters, odes, and manifestos will be published this fall. In an effort to increase the accessibility of control, celebration, and space for connection to and from body parts, Attention: People With Body Parts project has expanded to the web (it will be live starting in September).
The project developed from a desire to tackle my own body issues. However, this requires giving others space to do the same. Most of these feelings of detachment and negativity seem to stem from daily interactions between bodies and socially constructed understandings of those interactions. This project is a convergence of my ongoing battle with an eating disorder, experience of womanhood, queerness, and whiteness in America, changing relationship with movement and control of my own body through roller skating, and time working with other women who have experienced sexual violence.
Our bodies are filled with histories and identities, which overflow into the spaces between us. Histories and identities that change the way we look at each other and the way we look into the mirror. Together, we self-construct and self-destruct our bodies.
This book and site are intended to serve as safe-spaces for anyone who has been told or forced to believe safety is not something he/she/ze/they can find within the home, the body. This includes, but is not limited to: those who grapple with privilege in youth, color, and ableism, feel raveled in anxieties, hold tight to the lifelines in their palms, have histories of sexual violence and eating disorders, and those whose worlds confine their love based upon whether or not their partner has the same genitals. It is for people; people with body parts and anywhere in the transition between feeling unsafe to love.
But where does all of the money go?
All funding towards this project will go towards the publishing of this book (ISBN number, having copies printed and an ebook copy made) and maintaining the website over the coming months.
Talk with me, walk with me.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at email@example.com if you have any questions! OR if you would like to submit a letter / have interest in working on the project on your own or as a workshop with a specific target group. I am always happy to provide moral support.
A word of caution, this book is uncensored. it traces stories of naked bodies and naked language.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
