Everyone knows about Broadway.

Most people have heard of Off-Broadway.

A few people know about Off-Off Broadway.

But so few people have never heard of Black Box Theater. My goal is to change that. Black Box Theater Television is a web based series that was created to help shine a little light on the deep range of talent that lives and breathes within this community. Each month we will select a playwright, who will serve as our Artist in Residence. Coupled with our hand picked directors and extremely talented group of performers, we will bring these plays to life, in the spirit, and surroundings, of a Black Box Theater.

Black Box Theater is often called "Experimental Theater", which can sometimes sound a little off putting to the uninitiated. The reality is that it encompasses a variety of different styles of theater. Historically, some of today's greatest playwrights like Sam Shepard, David Mammet and Neil LaBute, along with some of today's greatest actors like Willem DeFoe, William H. Macy and Frank Langella all got their start in this community. In fact, one of televisions most successful sitcoms, "Friends", was created by Black Box Theater alum David Crane and Marta Kauffman.

It is a community rich with passion and the home to some of the most innovative storytelling and incredible performances currently on stage. You see, everything in Black Box Theater has to be good, the environment is so intimate, the sets are virtually nonexistent, the lights are minimal; all the attention is on the words and the performances. Without the dog and pony show of big budget theater, this level of theater relies on the very foundation of all good theater, words and performances.

Unfortunately, this is a part of the New York City theater experience so few know about and even less get a chance to see when they visit New York City.

I want to change that. Black Box Theater Television wants to bring this truly unique and excellent theater experience to you. There is an incredible depth of talent in this environment and it is as vibrant and lively as anything on the Great White Way.
