Appalachian sound play featuring live music, stunning visuals, and miles and miles of tape.
Runnin' Down the Mountain is an innovative Appalachian sound play from NEW NOISE. We first premiered an excerpt of the project this past summer in Sound Off! IV, our annual festival of works-in-progress. Then during this year's New Orleans Fringe Festival, we performed a longer, refined version of the show for an overflow audience.
Your support and feedback has been an essential part of this project, making it into what it is today. Now we need your help to bring it to completion!
Runnin’ Down the Mountain is the story of Everett and Margaret Riddle, a brother and sister, grown and living alone on their family’s orchard in the Great Smoky Mountains. Everett stays up late nights, rebuilding a cassette tape made of Momma that was broken years ago. Margaret buries her head in the encyclopedia and dreams of running away to attend college. This innovative new performance mixes original and traditional music, live looping and soundscapes with NEW NOISE’s own brand of visual storytelling to ask why we hand down what we do and why we’re raised to leave.
We've been building this piece for the last nine months, and dreaming on it for even longer. Our designers, performers, producers, and musicians are throwing their shoulders to the wheel as the piece nears fruition for our 2013 premiere. We've hit the jumping off point and we need your financial support to make that last leap and bring it to life!
Rig up a transformational mountain house set that unfolds to reveal its secrets! Outfit Margaret and Everett in character-and-place specific dress! Amp up our audio equipment so that the story can be told through songs coming out of buckets, loose tape played through external tape heads, live music amplified, looped and echoed! Pay our performers, musicians and designers! Create postcards and programs and get the word out about what's going down!
Our work could not exist without the support of the community around us - our families, friends, and audiences. Any contribution helps and will be meaningful to us and to the project. Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!!

We are working hard towards our January premier! We have lots to build, to record, to promote and to rehearse. But with a strong team of experienced and inventive collaborators (and a robust production calendar!), we are prepared to meet these challenges head-on.
Opening night is just the beginning. We are in the planning stages now to take Runnin' Down the Mountain on the road in 2013. This will be a huge step for NEW NOISE! But we believe in this project, and we are committed to its future. In order to make this a reality, we are submitting applications, inviting guests to the performance, and building the relationships now that will make it all possible—all while working towards a great run here in New Orleans.
