About this project

Free Educational Images! is a collaboration between an illustrator, a web designer, and a growing roster of teachers who want to create a free online resource for educators seeking visual aids in their classrooms. Teachers have a lot of jobs to do and fewer resources than ever, so they shouldn't have to spend hours of their "free time" searching for images of things like money or plant cells or kids sharing. The current crop of free online visual resources for educators are not very good, to say the least, and this project aims to change that. Our goal is to create a site that's easy to use and has a large and diverse collection of images that will be useful for class worksheets, lesson plans, slide shows, etc. The images will be copyright free and available to anyone who wants them for non-commercial use. There will be no memberships, no fees, and no tracking of who is using the images.

As far as content goes, we will be covering your standard classroom fair, with sections for Grade School, Middle School, and High School covering English, History, Math, Science, etc. All of the expected subjects will be covered and we have room to focus on other subjects and topics, depending on what our team of educators sees a need for.

Beyond the generally uninspired quality of the existing sites, they also present a remarkable lack of cultural diversity in their imagery. Images used in the classroom make a strong impression on children, so when an African American child is shown an image of a white woman that represents Grandmothers, a powerful message of cultural bias is sent. Our site will feature a Family and Community section, and our images of Grandmothers will offer illustrations of Black Grandmothers, White grandmothers, Abuelas, etc.

If our goal is reached, we will use the funds to create a site with approximately 1,000 images covering as broad a range of subjects as possible. All of the images will be based on the needs of our current team of educators and any other educators who would like to join our team as the project progresses. if we are able to raise funds beyond our goal we will be able to hire other artists to contribute to the project as well. Once the site is up, the cost of maintaining it will be very low, and we will be applying for grants to try to expand and create new images and work with more artists.
