Multiplayer Online Adventure Game aiming to revive the adventure puzzle genre. Outwit your friends but beware, who can you trust?
The Phoenix Project: Who Shall Rise
In this point and click adventure game players must use their wits and problem solving abilities to explore the temple, solve the puzzles and reach their goal. Players are in a race against time to reach their goal before their counterparts. The concept is to create a competitive environment where, in order to progress, users must work together with other people, who may have competing goals.
• Players will uncover details about the story, the experiment and even themselves as they play
• The game will be developed for iPad and potentially cross platform for stretch goals
Why the Phoenix?
The Phoenix; a representation of the new rising from the old. Of a new self being born out of pain suffering and death, to rise and live again. An emblem for hope.
There is always hope.

You are desperate. When you catch site of an advert that offers salvation – an escape from your suffering and hardship, not just for you, but for the one you love, you decide to investigate..
You know that they are looking for human test subjects, you know that you’ll need to sign a contract that forbids disclosure to anyone, you also know that you’ll be transported to a ‘secret location’ but beyond that it is a mystery. Who are ‘they’ that work for the Phoenix Project and what is their purpose?
BUT, they’ve assured you that your life will not be in danger – and let’s face it, it’s not exactly the Garden of Eden out there on these streets. So with that kind of reward you’d be crazy not to take the risk. Wouldn’t you?
We’ll be releasing more about The Phoenix Project during our Kickstarter campaign!
What's the Gameplay Like?
The Phoenix Project is a game that will leave you questioning what’s real, who you can trust, and what force lies behind the temple.
The players first perspectives of the game will be them signing up to the mysterious Phoenix Project experiment. We don’t want to ladle on lots and lots of character development because at the end of the day we want players to feel like they are really in the temple themselves.
Disorientated and confused, players enter the temple. The first rooms within the temple will give the players the feeling of an epic challenge ahead of them, one that they must win. We will use the environment itself to begin to build the players assumptions about the game world and their place within it.
At the heart of our game is the concept of puzzles. As players explore the environment they will uncover puzzles they can solve independently as well as epic puzzles that will involve the whole team.
We’re using time shifting so players can still progress in the game while their team mates are offline and gain valuable extra points, equipment or insight that will give them a better chance in the overall game.
The puzzles within the temple all have a naturalistic style to them. They are designed around manipulating elements of nature and are all designed to appeal to different problem solving styles and puzzle types.
New puzzle mechanics and abilities will be unveiled as player’s progress. Leverage multiple puzzle mechanics which involve;
·Collecting and applying objects to the environment
·Changing the environment to unlock/reveal doors/information/inventory items
Our puzzles range from visual matching tasks such as matching reflected objects, logical reasoning and pattern recognition all the way up to mind bending riddles and complex coordination activity.
Our intricate puzzles are built into the environment and may require object collection and strategic coordination between players. In these puzzles there may be conflicting goals and other players may help or hinder you depending on what they want out of the relationship.
As players will be solving puzzles built into the very foundation of the temple the players are affecting the world around them and because we’ll have different paths through the temple the game play will change for each player. The overall temple will be an enigma in and of itself. You will even be able to manipulate the positioning of the rooms in the temple themselves to make your path simpler and others more challenging.
Players in The Phoenix Project will have access to an inventory where they will be able to collect and store objects which are used to progress in the game. Items may be used in the current section, or in future sections, or may be required by other players.
This underlying concept, proffering players the choice whether to share objects, information and knowledge creates a risk, reward system players can use to their advantage.
The environmental messages, the notifications, and the risk reward system will all combine to create game play that encourages a competitive frame of mind to create absorbing and fun social dynamics between players.
How you’ll be able to play Project Phoenix
You will be able to play this game with friends or join a team online; you will be able to communicate with other players in the game with either an open or private communication channel. This means you decide how much information you share and with whom.As we’re not forcing all players to be online together we’ll make sure of a notification system to alert other players of activity in the game. This will create a pull and give players a reason to come back to the game. Notifications may be given for example when a player enters a new section of the temple, when they gain extra points, or gain a valuable item.
To create this game we need £75,000
With this money we will be able to create a multiplayer game for iPad, with up to 4 hours of game play, multiple payoff and multiple pathways.
Of course with more money we could make it cross platform, include more puzzles and even richer graphics!
Meet the Team
We’re a group of game designers, artists and developers and we love making games. Project Phoenix is the brain child of Helen Routledge, Chris Chadwick and Vicky Rose. The initial concept has been stewing in our minds for a while and we finally feel the time is right to make this game.
Helen Routledge is the Lead Designer for the Phoenix Project. She is a trained psychologist and has been immersed in games for the past 10 years.
Chris Chadwick is the graphical lead and games designer. He has a wealth of experience creating both 3D and 2D art, interfaces and characters and has run his own studio before joining Totem Play.
Vicky Rose is a product designer, with a background managing some of the most prominent entertainment brands such as Postman Pat, He-man, Trap door, Scooby Doo and Cow and Chicken.
We are really excited about this game and will put our heart and soul into making it happen - so please help this phoenix to rise!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Games are pretty complex beasts and we’re mixing it up even further by merging multiplayer interactions and time shifting player interactions. Luckily for us the team behind the project have 90 years combined experience of managing, creating, and most importantly delivering both single player and multiplayer games.
Designing good puzzles is also pretty challenging…getting the balance right between too easy and downright tear your hair out frustrating. The idea behind the Phoenix Project has been around for a couple of years so we already have a tremendous amount of concept materials and design work completed.
We’ve tested out and refined physical versions of our puzzles (modelled in cardboard) with a wide range of people and the feedback we’ve received has been great. Our test group feedback has allowed us to design a group of puzzles that gets that balance just right.
